Hey all,

I am contemplating buying a new vacuum cleaner. Having Murphy and Maggie shedding all over creation has all but killed my last one and it's on last legs anyway. I've been looking at several that are specific to pet cleaning, but don't want to spend $500 on a Dyson (it's a vacuum cleaner, not a iTouch for heaven's sake!) Have any of you found a good bagless vacuum that works well for you, especially if you have pets at home? Just curious.

Seriously, the Dyson is built to last. This is our third vac and has outlasted the two previous ones we have had. We just have the nice yellow one for $300 at Target. The only time that it lost suction was when I didn't clean the filter. I wish I would have purhcased the next one up, but I was skeptical as vacs don't seem to last very long. It is worth the money. We have two active dogs so, it passes the animal test.

Watch Target clearances. We got lucky and got a Dyson there for half off the original price. It was after Christmas, and they had originally marked them down by 30%, but we watched every day and waited until they went down one more discount level.

This was stuff thay they red-sticker and put on one of the small endcaps to the regular aisles, instead of being on display with the regular display of vacuums.

I recently bought a Bissell Healthy Home vac, which I'm very impressed with. They also have a Pet version of this vac.

There was a $50 rebate on the Healthy Home, and I picked mine up at Target when they had a free $50 gift card with purchase. So, my final price was $149

I don't think it's essential to by a Dyson for a quality vacuum cleaner. They are good, but they're not fantastic as the commercials claim. There are others vacuum cleaners that do just as good or better for the same price.

I think it comes down to price for any good vacuum cleaner. $100? Yeah, not going to last long. Looking at Consumer Reports, you need to spend about $300 for a really good vacuum. Kenmore's rated at the top for uprights (as of Jan 2008). Dyson ranked lower at 10th, and 15th place approximately with a MSRP over $550--ouch.

You should get yourself an online subscription to Consumer Reports. It's well worth the money.

You are absolutely right about it being a vacuum and not an iTouch, however, your vacuum should last much longer than that bit of technology. Consider it an investment to last you over the next ten years (minimum). I hear the Dyson is great for pet fur, but since it doesn't have a bag, you have to constantly clean the reservoir ... almost after every use. The opposing thumb is something with a bag that does have its suction reduced over time as the bad fills ... I suppose it's more the matter of convenience for your standpoint. Good luck with your decision ... either way, I fear the result will suck.

I'm sorry that I can't speak to this question. I'm still using my Mother's Kirby from the 1960s. It's had three minor repairs in the last 30 years. Unfortunately, the new Kirbys have bags and are $1300.

we're all about the dyson in our household. and thankfully, cause my partner's sister works for a regional dept. store, we took advantage of her employee 50% special day...and got the top o' the line one for about $260.

don't hate, please. you're too pretty to make that face.

btw, this is our second dyson...we've had the pretty purple one for about 4 years, and while it's still going strong, couldn't pass up the discount.

I got a Dyson from woot.com on sale for like 220 a few weeks ago and it's AMAZING. It totally blew my mind. Keep an eye on woot and deal forums like fatwallet.com until you find a deal on a Dyson you can afford. It's worth the wait.

I like my 2 Dirt Devils. One is the basic upright, bagless, and it's adequate with my 2 long-haired cats.

The other is a hand-held thingie. I bought it because at the time I had carpeted stairs that were a pain in the ass to vacuum. It's loud, and it blows a lot of air out of the side. However.....it's so cute! (dumb, I know).

Also you have to empty the canister pretty much every time you use it.

So....not much help, am I?? : )
