Friday the 13th Last night I was flipping through channels and landed on AMC that was playing the original Friday the 13th on "DVD on TV." I really enjoyed watching this because they had trivia facts about the movie and the stars at the bottom of the screen. I thought that was really interesting. For example,

  • Betsy Palmer only did the movie so she could buy a new car and thought the script was a piece of crap.
  • The filming was racing against the clock as the trees at the camp were turning color. The movie was set in the Spring, but it was turning Autumn.
  • The producers wanted Sally Field to play the surviving character and Estelle Parsons to play Mrs. Voorhees. Both declined.

I wish I could have taped it for the trivia facts. This was one of the first movies that really scared me. Okay, sue me, I'm a horror movie geek :D

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first film, it seems there was a get together of actors, directors and such. I caught this Yahoo! News story about the event. It seems there's also a book about the movie series as well and talk about one more sequel and plans to remake the original.

Always remember this film because I saw it with my mom, who was also a horror junkie like myself, the weekend it first opened. The icing on the cake for us was having to walk around to the back of the mall in the partial dark to get to the car. I liked this most because you had no idea who the hell the killer was until the last 15 minutes, as well as the fact that you actually got to know the characters more before they started getting bumped off.

I think that is why the movie worked so well. Not only did you not get to see the killer until the end, but you didn't even know her throughout the movie. She just shows up, introduces herself, and then goes a little crazy... :D

And I LOVED that people were expecting a guy to be behind all this carnage, and it turns out to be a SHE.

Ah, equality of the sexes... that was a great twist :)

I could never figure out, when the heroine in the 1st film opened the jeep to find a dead body in it, why she didn't just kick the corpse out and drive off?

LOL.. I wouldn't have even bothered to do that, I'd have driven off and kicked poor Annie's body out along the way as I went to get help. We're made of sterner stuff than the 1980's horror survivor chick apparently.

Or check her pockets for change. I also could never figure out why parents continued to send their kids to this camp after all the murders from the 1st film.

"Mom, where is there a 'Room for Rent' sign in the front window?"
"Nevermind, Timmy. Now be a good boy and get on the bus."
