Friday the 13th Last night I was flipping through channels and landed on AMC that was playing the original Friday the 13th on "DVD on TV." I really enjoyed watching this because they had trivia facts about the movie and the stars at the bottom of the screen. I thought that was really interesting. For example,

  • Betsy Palmer only did the movie so she could buy a new car and thought the script was a piece of crap.
  • The filming was racing against the clock as the trees at the camp were turning color. The movie was set in the Spring, but it was turning Autumn.
  • The producers wanted Sally Field to play the surviving character and Estelle Parsons to play Mrs. Voorhees. Both declined.

I wish I could have taped it for the trivia facts. This was one of the first movies that really scared me. Okay, sue me, I'm a horror movie geek :D

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first film, it seems there was a get together of actors, directors and such. I caught this Yahoo! News story about the event. It seems there's also a book about the movie series as well and talk about one more sequel and plans to remake the original.

Friday the 13th Celebrates 25 Years

I can't say that I'm much for horror movies, but I do remember lying on the living room floor with my brother watching this movie with only the light from one candle.

It scared the bejesus out of us when he jumped out of the water at the end.

Ah, the old horror flicks always spooked me better than most of the current ones. And that "jump out of the lake" scene did the same to me the first time I saw it.

As for horror movies, don't worry handsome, I'd protect ya ;)

I can't say I would mind a remake.

But ANOTHER sequel? Nyah. Jason X was TEH-RIH-BULL.

I'd be curious how a modern take on it would go, newer special effects. I think the original does a grand job of hiding a mystery killer though. The trivia on the movie actually stated that the filmer actually pre-exposed the film to be used because it gave more contrast in the darker scenes, which made it seem eerie. Newer technology might kill some of the atmosphere, which would be my worry.

And Jason X was crap, true...

It's also proof of the existence of hard drugs in Hollywood. There's no way anyone can tell me that the concept of Jason in outer space didn't involve some very potent weed and the mother of all bongs.

Always remember this film because I saw it with my mom, who was also a horror junkie like myself, the weekend it first opened. The icing on the cake for us was having to walk around to the back of the mall in the partial dark to get to the car. I liked this most because you had no idea who the hell the killer was until the last 15 minutes, as well as the fact that you actually got to know the characters more before they started getting bumped off.

I think that is why the movie worked so well. Not only did you not get to see the killer until the end, but you didn't even know her throughout the movie. She just shows up, introduces herself, and then goes a little crazy... :D

And I LOVED that people were expecting a guy to be behind all this carnage, and it turns out to be a SHE.

I could never figure out, when the heroine in the 1st film opened the jeep to find a dead body in it, why she didn't just kick the corpse out and drive off?

LOL.. I wouldn't have even bothered to do that, I'd have driven off and kicked poor Annie's body out along the way as I went to get help. We're made of sterner stuff than the 1980's horror survivor chick apparently.

Or check her pockets for change. I also could never figure out why parents continued to send their kids to this camp after all the murders from the 1st film.

"Mom, where is there a 'Room for Rent' sign in the front window?"
"Nevermind, Timmy. Now be a good boy and get on the bus."

Oh, you should... It's not the splatter gorefest so many horror movies have today, it has a plot, atmosphere, suspense...

Mark is a HUGE Friday the 13th fan. He saw that this was going to be on and recorded it. I'm not sure if he Tivoed it or video taped it.

Thanks for the link. It included information about a book that just came out. Perfect B-day present for him.

Ah, I wish I had known about it before so I could have recorded it. I caught it when it was nearly half over.

I ordered the book myself today. I'm looking forward to reading it, the previews look great -- lots of candid photos and facts.

Yes it is a remake, I think James Caan was in the original. This newer version seem to be more of a bit campier version.
