Me at 40. It's a funny feeling to actually say it, but I don't know why.

Mark At 40
Me at 40

I never had predictions or hopes for what I'd be at 40. I don't know if that strange or not. I always thought I'd be married with kids at 27, when 2000 came around, but never really wondered beyond that. When 30 hit, I finally admitted to myself that I was gay and things took an amazing upswing in my life and my attitude towards it. Having such a milestone happen, I wasn't sure what would top it.

Last night, I was getting my hair did by a young woman from Ecuador. In trying to strike up conversation, she asked me if I had kids or was married and I said no to both. She then asked me if I wanted kids, and I found myself admitting that I've accepted that I likely will not and that I'm okay with that too. A part of me wondered if she was fishing for a husband.

At a young age I had projected what I felt I should have based on what everyone else was doing at 27 or 30. Part of growing up is realizing that those things are just not what will happen, even though it defies a great deal of convention. 40, unmarried, and childless. Eh, that's okay.

The twin sent me a birthday card that said "We Made It!" inside. It caught me off-guard because I never thought for a moment that we wouldn't. Maybe having no long-term goals at milestones is for the best. I suspect it will only get better from here and I won't be disappointed.

I thought the same thing when I hit 40 last year. I made it. Then it was like it's just another number. Better than the alternative. You make 40 look good.
Happy birthday handsome!!

Happy Birthday, Handsome! I've missed hearing from you lately. My 40's were my best decade by far, so much of life ahead of you and the wisdom to know what you want and don't want. I wanted children, but it was never in the cards. I was honest with myself early on, though didn't say I was gay out loud to most of my friends and family until I was 36. To each his own. You have many blessings to count, now get busy! :)

HUGS!

ps .. Be sure to check out [livejournal.com profile] designerotter's drawing for your birthday!

Thanks Neil! I'm looking forward to what the 40's have to offer. And Joe's drawing was AWESOME! :)

My mother and sisters made turning 40 a fun experience. My mother sent me a crystal vase with a dozen white carnations that had been spray painted black and dusted with glitter. The older of my two sisters sent me a styrofoam tombstone that read "Lordy, look who's 40!" I saved it for four years and sent it back to her on HER 40th birthday. My younger sister sent me a bunch of "Jurassic Park" stuff: pencils, notepads, stickers; and stated that science had finally proven that I was actually younger than the dinosaurs...by two weeks.

I thought it all was hysterical; my partner just shook his head; he does not understand this kind of humor at all.

BTW...turning 50 was a non-event, because everyone assumed I was at least 52, probably 55, by that time already.

LOL... I suspect my office is going to be decorated with a lot of the things you have described. I have a coworker who does such things often :)

And 50? I can only guess what will happen :)

I wouldn't sweat it. Considering that you look better at 40 than I did at 30, you'll be phenominal at 50.

Happy Birthday!

Hope it was a great one!

Hoping your 40's will be a great decade for you.

40 was no biggie; neither was 50, actually.

60 is only a few years away for me now, LOL!

For the record, Tom was 41 the year Anna was born.

I guess it might be different if I had a desire to have kids. My dad was 39 when I was born.

There are days I might have thought of having kids, but I'm good being the uncle to many.

I strayed over from a reliable blog. I like your comics. There's a child-like imagination that's precious. The quality of the drawing of Santa is very nice.

So I thought to say hi.

You look great in this pic! Happy belated Birthday.

PS: I don't have a pic, but I'm real. I post things some people may consider nasty (if they read) or inappropriate, whatever that means. But people who are not too stuck with their own righteousness tend to want to make friends.

I hope you will. It would be a pleasure.

Cheers,
Thanh

Thanks Tranh.

After many years on here, I've set up my criteria for adding folks and I am not comfortable adding folks with no userpics at all. I'm sure you have your reasons for not having any.

Take care,
Mark
