I posted this back in 2008. It was my first attempt at comic book drawing, before I learned to use the Comic Life software draw the panels. My friends Thom and Jay were adopting a young boy about the time I was considering the origin of Grizzly and the idea just came together. My idea was that two men could provide the DNA to create a biological child of their own. It seemed like a neat way to start up an origin and even leave a bit of mystery in the story.

So I created this story with a bear couple, Thom and Jay, who had a baby boy through unknown means. This kid grew up to develop super powers. I printed out the story to give to the guys and they loved it.

I was chatting with Thom last night and sent him the link to the latest Bear Patrol issue. He asked if I ever posted the Grizzly origin story. I had, but only as a friends-only post. So that's why this repost (and so anyone new to my journal can see it too).

didn't you have a double major of chem and BA? "On the growl" is an awesome name for a bar.

I only have a degree in chemistry actually. And I was trying to be clever on the name of the bar. I think if I owned one that would be what I would call it. :)

Thanks! I've thought about re-drawing this as it seems like I've learned to use Photoshop better, but my buddies Thom and Jay like it, so I may just leave well-enough alone.

Oh, don't re-draw. I've been told several times that one of the perks of going through BWM's archive is noting how the art has "evolved". This may be one example of your art evolving as you master new techniques and software.

You're right, but I do admit that I think I could to better now. I had to redo the lettering on the pages at some point.

Marvelous - Ach! Der Grizzly is looking woofier than ever!
A really swell job in telling the story so handsomely and efficiently.
Love the use of monochrome in places, not to mention details like "BARMAID" across his shirt.
Congrats - a very satisfying episode!

Thanks!

And I have always loved the idea of a big burly bartender wearing a shirt saying "BARMAID" for some reason, like anyone would dare make fun of him :)

And just where have you been, young man???

Well, there is a hidden joke in that panel. My buddy Thom was a wrestling coach, so I thought he'd like that I made his cartoon son a wrestling champ capable of scaring the competition.

Real Son

Well, now, I gave him the full beard that YOU have :)

And remember, dark hair trumps red hair usually in the old genetic-dominance-trait wheel.

In my comic book world, he's also an AMAZING cook like you.
