Monday Odds and Ends
Aug. 17th, 2009 08:10 am- You know you're getting old when the superheroes in the comics you read since you were a kid are now YOUNGER than you are.
- On comics, the "Blackest Night" storyline at DC is the bomb. Also, I hope that the Legion of Super-Heroes is going to get a separate series, as I don't see me getting enough out of a back-up in "Adventure Comics."
- What has happened to Bearciti? Is it now gone for good?
- On Friday, Tim (making his second appearance in the journal now) and I watched Rebecca, which I'd always heard about (mainly through the Carol Burnett Show Parody "Rebecky"), but not seen. Incredible movie. A young woman marries a wealthy widower and moves into his mansion only to discover that the shadow of the previous wife still reigns in the house. The best of the movie is Judith Anderson who plays the evil Mrs. Danvers! I bought this one.
- I saw District 9 this past weekend. The movie starts a bit slow and silly, but turns into a really good movie. I would hope that we as the human race would treat aliens better than this. The acting was good, as was some of the eye candy and the special effects. I can see a sequel in the future.
- I haven't stopped doing the found money project for the year. I haven't counted it in a week or so, but I think I'm now above $3, which isn't bad considering it is mostly pennies.
- I am in a drawing mood, but hitting a drawing block. Dang...

Date: 2009-08-17 03:41 pm (UTC)I remember reading recently (though I can't remember where — old age!) that it's DC's intention to use the back-up aspect of Adventure Comics as a way of establishing this Legion while at the same time luring Superboy readers into the fold. And the lines will be crossed separating the main and back-up stories. In issue #1 alone, there are already at least four Legionnaires in Smallville!
Too bad Geoff Johns doesn't have Duplicate Damsel's powers. It'd be great if he could write for the Legion 24/7, but he's spread thin enough as it is with the Flash and something called "Blackest Night"...
And if I had the money right now, I'd commission a bearded Starman piece from you! I don't know if you've ever done LSH pics though.

Date: 2009-08-17 04:30 pm (UTC)So it's time to update your Comic Book Bears icon to include him, eh?

Date: 2009-08-17 06:27 pm (UTC)And another Perez possibility is Superman Prime in Lo3W. He's a baddie, but bad-ass with a salt & pepper beard!

Date: 2009-08-17 04:23 pm (UTC)And since when do you need money to have me draw something? I've not drawn LSH characters for some time, but Starman has always been a favorite! And the bearded Starman is super hot!

Date: 2009-08-17 04:29 pm (UTC)Agreed. Keith Giffen's LSH cover of the bearded Starboy was what got me back into reading the Legion after a long absence (thanks to the infantile stories by Cary Bates). Up until The Great Darkness saga (and some would say the Earthwar arc), pretty much everything in the 200-numbered series was a waste of time.
And I mentioned money for a drawing because you're an artist and you deserve to be compensated!

Date: 2009-08-17 06:37 pm (UTC)Well, I sure as hell don't wanna see him sucking face with Dream Girl!!!
But I would imagine his current costume would be a bitch to draw, so if you wanna draw him in just some some star-filled boxer briefs...

Date: 2009-08-17 04:55 pm (UTC)It has yet to be explained, but Johns appears to be the kind of writer who (eventually) fills in the details.
They've always played fast and loose with Triplicate Girl though, from the fact that Carggians die when even one of their bodies is killed to Waid's notion that Luornu could repopulate Cargg herself (something he never explained either). I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it's Waid's Luornu as Duplicate Damsel, but I hope Johns is more clever than that.

Date: 2009-08-17 05:16 pm (UTC)I think Una is the one they're referencing; we just don't have the explanation yet. As Starman himself said:

Date: 2009-08-17 06:10 pm (UTC)I'm wondering if every Carggite could do this potentially. Since the usual Carggite dies if one of the original three selves perishes, maybe no one ever knew. Maybe it only occurs when only one of the three remain.
And I'm not sure how the changes since the "Five Years Later" storyline has changed from the comic, but Luornu was given a force-field power by Brainiac 5. Later, when her other self was found to be alive and then reinegrated into Duo Damsel, I wonder if Brainy did something in that process to cause this multiple duplicate power to evolve.
See... a back-up in Adventure Comics just isn't enough space!!!!

Date: 2009-08-17 06:36 pm (UTC)Wasn't it somewhere revealed that Phantom Girl was part Cargggite and Phase from L.E.G.I.O.N. was really one of her dupes? I'm sure that has been scratched from continuity (thankfully) but I can't remember when that all was... was it part of 5 years later or did it come ummmm... like 5 years later LOL
It does seem to me they are completely skipping over the whole 5 years later thing completely. Blok alive, no mention of the Garth/Imra Validus baby, or the Garth is protty thing now that I think about it. Will be very interesting to see what Geoff Johns decides to keep and what he decides to toss over time. Yep... I want my full Legion book now!

Date: 2009-08-17 07:23 pm (UTC)I actually quite liked the reboot/earth 247 Legion but the original is definitely my fave. I've been pretty geek boy happy to see the likes of Blok, Dawnstar and others.

Date: 2009-08-18 02:42 pm (UTC)I think my problem is I've been reading DC books including S&theLSH since the mid-70s and with 30 some years of history and reboots I'm just totally starting to have a hard time remember which is which. It would be nice to have Johns give us a decent overview of where the Legion really stands now as far as it's history.

Date: 2009-08-18 03:04 pm (UTC)My biggest fear was that they'd create an integrated Legion from the three different teams, different ages, different pasts, etc., which thankfully it looks like the writer avoided largely.
