  • You know you're getting old when the superheroes in the comics you read since you were a kid are now YOUNGER than you are.
  • On comics, the "Blackest Night" storyline at DC is the bomb. Also, I hope that the Legion of Super-Heroes is going to get a separate series, as I don't see me getting enough out of a back-up in "Adventure Comics."
  • What has happened to Bearciti? Is it now gone for good?
  • On Friday, Tim (making his second appearance in the journal now) and I watched Rebecca, which I'd always heard about (mainly through the Carol Burnett Show Parody "Rebecky"), but not seen. Incredible movie. A young woman marries a wealthy widower and moves into his mansion only to discover that the shadow of the previous wife still reigns in the house. The best of the movie is Judith Anderson who plays the evil Mrs. Danvers! I bought this one.
  • I saw District 9 this past weekend. The movie starts a bit slow and silly, but turns into a really good movie. I would hope that we as the human race would treat aliens better than this. The acting was good, as was some of the eye candy and the special effects. I can see a sequel in the future.
  • I haven't stopped doing the found money project for the year. I haven't counted it in a week or so, but I think I'm now above $3, which isn't bad considering it is mostly pennies.
  • I am in a drawing mood, but hitting a drawing block. Dang...

I'm really enjoying Blackest Night so far. Way better than Final Crisis. Not that that would be hard...

I never read much of the original Legion beyond a few comics of my uncle's, but I'm definitely enjoying how it's been popping up over the past few years. It's possible that the Legion backup will take over more of the book at some point. After all, Adventure Comics was originally both Superboy and the Legion in a similar format.

I was curious so I did a google search a week or two ago about Bearciti. I ran across their Twitter, and they were moving servers but got busy with their full time jobs. *shrug*

So is this Tim a friend, or a "friend" in the sense that some people's parents use? ;)

I'm thinking that bearciti is indeed gone *poof*

Seems like everyone is giving District 9 the same review.

I am just consistently loving Geoff Johns' work... it's so obvious he loves the characters he writes, be it Legion, Green Lantern, Flash and so on. I'm still bummed he left JSA but at least there is still his work with crazy Starman LOL. Just started Blackest Night and yeah, loving it too.

wow... no, not so much feeling the naughty school girl thing but total fanboy geekism for sure ;)

so, as a naughty school girl do you wear underwear under your cute little plaid skirt?

I don't see me getting enough out of a back-up in "Adventure Comics."

I remember reading recently (though I can't remember where — old age!) that it's DC's intention to use the back-up aspect of Adventure Comics as a way of establishing this Legion while at the same time luring Superboy readers into the fold. And the lines will be crossed separating the main and back-up stories. In issue #1 alone, there are already at least four Legionnaires in Smallville!

Too bad Geoff Johns doesn't have Duplicate Damsel's powers. It'd be great if he could write for the Legion 24/7, but he's spread thin enough as it is with the Flash and something called "Blackest Night"...

And if I had the money right now, I'd commission a bearded Starman piece from you! I don't know if you've ever done LSH pics though.

Oh he is indeed! I remember seeing him back in the 80's with the beard and was ecstatic. Bearded heroes were scarce then.

So it's time to update your Comic Book Bears icon to include him, eh?

Oh I have thought about updating my comic book bears icon lately and the artwork in the Adventure Comics #1 had some great shots I could use.

And another Perez possibility is Superman Prime in Lo3W. He's a baddie, but bad-ass with a salt & pepper beard!

I really do hope that we'll see more of the Legionnaires. It looks as though we'll see them in Smallville (though we still don't know where Sensor Girl is located yet).

And since when do you need money to have me draw something? I've not drawn LSH characters for some time, but Starman has always been a favorite! And the bearded Starman is super hot!

And the bearded Starman is super hot!

Agreed. Keith Giffen's LSH cover of the bearded Starboy was what got me back into reading the Legion after a long absence (thanks to the infantile stories by Cary Bates). Up until The Great Darkness saga (and some would say the Earthwar arc), pretty much everything in the 200-numbered series was a waste of time.

And I mentioned money for a drawing because you're an artist and you deserve to be compensated!

Well, I sure as hell don't wanna see him sucking face with Dream Girl!!!

But I would imagine his current costume would be a bitch to draw, so if you wanna draw him in just some some star-filled boxer briefs...

speaking of Duplicate Damsel... what exactly happened here? There was some mention in Legion of 3 Worlds of her final triplicate having died in the 21st century and she became Duplicate Damsel... was this the dup that died on another earth in Countdown or was it some place else that I missed?

It has yet to be explained, but Johns appears to be the kind of writer who (eventually) fills in the details.

They've always played fast and loose with Triplicate Girl though, from the fact that Carggians die when even one of their bodies is killed to Waid's notion that Luornu could repopulate Cargg herself (something he never explained either). I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it's Waid's Luornu as Duplicate Damsel, but I hope Johns is more clever than that.

thanks, at first I was thinking they were refering to when the final trip died in the 5 years later stories, but the "21st century" part threw that off. The only thing I could think of was the one who died in Countdown but she seemed like one of the younger Legionaires either from the 247 group or Waid's 3-boot. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one left in the dark on the new Duplicate Damsel... not to mention which Karate Kid bit it in Countdown... original flavor (already dead), 247, or 3-boot. *confused* LOL

the one who died in Countdown

I think Una is the one they're referencing; we just don't have the explanation yet. As Starman himself said:

Don't worry about Luornu... Triplicate! Duo! Una! Wait until you see what happens to her!

I'm curious how her power changed/evolved too.

I'm wondering if every Carggite could do this potentially. Since the usual Carggite dies if one of the original three selves perishes, maybe no one ever knew. Maybe it only occurs when only one of the three remain.

And I'm not sure how the changes since the "Five Years Later" storyline has changed from the comic, but Luornu was given a force-field power by Brainiac 5. Later, when her other self was found to be alive and then reinegrated into Duo Damsel, I wonder if Brainy did something in that process to cause this multiple duplicate power to evolve.

See... a back-up in Adventure Comics just isn't enough space!!!!

OMG... I totally forgot they found one of the triplicates alive in 5 years later. I bow to your much superior memory of that era!

Wasn't it somewhere revealed that Phantom Girl was part Cargggite and Phase from L.E.G.I.O.N. was really one of her dupes? I'm sure that has been scratched from continuity (thankfully) but I can't remember when that all was... was it part of 5 years later or did it come ummmm... like 5 years later LOL

It does seem to me they are completely skipping over the whole 5 years later thing completely. Blok alive, no mention of the Garth/Imra Validus baby, or the Garth is protty thing now that I think about it. Will be very interesting to see what Geoff Johns decides to keep and what he decides to toss over time. Yep... I want my full Legion book now!

I admit that I lost interest in the Legion after the Five Years Later part, so I never read the other versions of the LSH. I did look at the Wikipedia entry on Phantom Girl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_Girl) and during one of the later LSH incarnations it was found that she was part Cargggite and Phase was one of her duplicates.

That's an interesting twist, I didn't know that one.

it was yet another attempt to reconcile the unreconcilable. Originally she was hinted to be Tinya, then turned out to be Tinya's sister or cousin, then after all the reboots it got fiddle around with again and she was part Cargggite. I can't remember what supposedly happened with the 3rd triplicate of hers.

I actually quite liked the reboot/earth 247 Legion but the original is definitely my fave. I've been pretty geek boy happy to see the likes of Blok, Dawnstar and others.

I have not been into the Legion in ages. I stopped reading in 1980, then first came back in 1985 but never really got into the Legion again - the Titans more or less filled that slot at that point. I attempted to get back in at the 5-year-later point and liked some elements - like Kent Shakespeare and how f'd-up some of the stalwarts had become - but it didn't take. I've have liked everything Johns has done so far.

I really have enjoyed all that Johns has done but I used to feel that way about Gail Simone... she could do no wrong. But her Wonder Woman has just been so unenjoyable to me. It seemed like such a match but hasn't worked. Now I'm always afraid Geoff Johns will finally come up with something I don't like LOL But so far... he has so rocked my comic world the last few years

I seem to remember in Lo3W, someone mentioned that the original Karate Kid had come back somehow, but then had died in the 21st century. I'm assuming that the original Legion we're seeing again is a slightly altered version that Johns decided to split off at some point in their continuity (probably before he thought it got bad).

From: [identity profile] dendren.livejournal.com
LOL... yeah, the Karate Kid thing was slightly confusing too. I don't much remember the new one in the black and green. I'm thinking he wasn't around very long before the reboots, or maybe wasn't really utilized much.

I think my problem is I've been reading DC books including S&theLSH since the mid-70s and with 30 some years of history and reboots I'm just totally starting to have a hard time remember which is which. It would be nice to have Johns give us a decent overview of where the Legion really stands now as far as it's history.

I totally agree with you there. I've been reading LSH since the 80's (and reading the back issues from the 1970's) and managed to keep the continuity straight until they started doing all the "later" versions and "reboot" versions and whatnot.

My biggest fear was that they'd create an integrated Legion from the three different teams, different ages, different pasts, etc., which thankfully it looks like the writer avoided largely.

Date: 2009-08-18 03:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dendren.livejournal.com
yeah, I was fearful they would do the same. It looks to me like just XS (did they explain how she ended up on Earth 247 in the first place?) and Gates are making the move from reboot Legions. I can see XS just cause they had to reconcile her being Barry's granddaughter... but Gates??? I'm *very* curious to see what Johns has planned for the little teleporting bug... he must have something planned if he pulled him to the regular LSH universe LOL

I thought the "Legion of Super Heroes" did have their own on-going series. Of course, I'm so behind in my reading, I quit buying new comics about 2 months ago. Currently getting ready to pour some time in Midnighter - he's a hot batman wannabe that happens to be gay gay gay!

Everything I hear about District 9 has me wanting to see it bad. Maybe soon young padawan.

Glad to hear you are in the drawing mood again. Love your work!
