Nothing like packing for a trip to DC and trying to load up new music only to find my iZombie has kicked the bucket again. After trying for over an hour, I'm not sure I can resurrect it again using non-magical means.

So the question is what kind of iPod should I replace it with? My iPod Shuffle, while cute, just doesn't have the capacity for podcasts and audiobooks I usually load up for travel. Should I go after an iPod Touch? The internet function would be nice, but I'd probably only get the 16 GB as I change music often. If I'm only after the music part, maybe an iPod Classic or even an iPod Mini? iZombie is a 2003 model and has a 20 GB capacity that I never reached, so a smaller one might be suitable.

Opinions? Suggestions? There is an Apple Store near my DC hotel, so I may buy one while I'm gone.

How about a nano? It's small, has plenty of capacity and does not have all the bells and whistles you might not need anyway? I have the older nano.

Wish I could be there in DC to meet you. So close, but still far away. I'm working on a trip up your way anyway.

I went to the Apple Store tonight and looked at few models. Since all of my music files are at home, I'll probably wait until I get home to buy something.

And I wish you could have made it too, but a trip my way is good news.

I wound up replacing my dead ipod with an 80 GB iPod earlier this spring.

The Touches don't really appeal to me, for some reason, and the Nanos were just too small in memory capacity for me.

The touch would be a great flashy gadget -- although not one you want to take to the gym -- but if you're looking to save money, check out a refurb nano or classic at the online Apple Store. They are a great deal.

I like the idea of buying a refurbished model, but they are really strange about their shipping. I had to have my iZombie sent off for repair in the past and it took an act of God to get it back as they wouldn't leave it at my address unless someone is there to sign for it. Naturally every time they delivered was during work hours when I was never home.

I agree with Brian, you can usually get a good deal on a refurbished model.
I also listen to a lot of audiobooks and can be a little moody when it comes to music, so I need something with a lot of memory.

Yikes! Good to know about the software update charges. That certainly does change my opinion of it. Thanks for letting me know :)

I have one of these sitting here:

It's the "second generation" Nano. 4 GB model. Project (RED) or whatever. Even has the lanyard headphones that let you wear the iPod around your neck.

Cheapy-cheap, if you want it.

It's certainly tempting, handsome, but I think I need something with a bit more memory. :)

LOL! Sorry I didn't inform you sooner. The trip was not something I was especially looking forward to and I kept in the back of mind. I also keep forgetting where people live.

I should be back soon :)

This stinks.

When our house was broken into last December, my old 30g iPod was one of the things to go a'walking.

Mom my, trying to be sweet, bought me an 8g Touch for Christmas. I'm a gadget gal and love it from that aspect. I like the interface and it works with the iPod accessories I'd used with my old one.

I've only experienced one upgrade Apple has charged for: the $19.95 upgrade someone else mentioned (I don't sync very often - not sure if there was an upgrade for the Touch with the latest iPhone release.) The initial fee upgrade was for features already contained in the iPhone (map, weather, email) ... since I only use the Touch for music, I didn't bother. I use my iPhone for all that stuff. =) (And yes, I realize there's no real point to having the phone AND the Touch - but the Touch Mom sent was engraved and non-returnable/exchangeable as a result.)

The Touch is very shiny and pretty and iPhone-like, but I'd much rather have my old 30g back.

What did you end up with?

Where HAVE you been???

Sounds like Nurse Pat is a generous mom! You have an iPhone and an iTouch... you are the gadget gal!

I ended up buying an iPod Classic 80GB and have been enjoying it. I thought about getting an iTouch, but I just didn't feel that the 8 GB had enough memory.
