I revised the Human Shield design after a comment from [livejournal.com profile] dr_tectonic asked about something a bit more revealing. It makes sense actually. An invulnerable hero probably doesn't need much of a costume. It reminds me of the Laurel Kent characters in the "Legion of Super-Heroes" universe, a 30th century descendant of Superman who inherited his invulnerability. As such, she wore very little in terms of a costume (usually a glorified bikini with no shoes). I prefer this hairy-chested hero instead, but she was pretty cool.

I may go the force-field route power-wise so people don't accuse me of ripping off Laurel Kent. It works either way for me.

The Human Shield Revised

Work has been hectic this week, which has made the week practically fly by. Still, I took a little time to do some drawing this week to relax.

I posted about Dial "H" for Hero characters before. Sometimes while watching a movie or on my drive home from work, an idea for a new character will appear in my head. Usually it involves a cool name or a cool power and the development starts from there.

021 - Human Shield-Circa
The Human Shield and Circa

While I watching "American Sniper" over the weekend with the local moviebears, the idea popped into my head to have a character called "The Human Shield," a hero with the power of invulnerability or to generate an impenetrable force field around himself. As such, he could wear a relatively revealing costume and have an odd bravado because he couldn't be hurt. So last night, I sat down and drew these characters out while catching up on my DVR.

The female character is called "Circa." I've also thought it was such a cool word and it would be a neat name for a heroine. The problem is trying to define her power. Circa means "almost" or "about" and is usually used as an adjective regarding time, such as Circa 1970 or Circa 100 B.C. So would she have the ability to move through time? Or maybe she could control time, making it faster or slower?

These are likely not characters who will appear in my comic book anytime soon, but it's good to have them in a file in case I need them. I think I've decided to create "The Character Bank," a place to put these characters for future development.

Lightning Bug and Invulnerable GirlI've posted about this before, I think. As a kid, one of my favorite comic characters was "Dial 'H' for Hero" where two kids found magical dials that would transform them into a variety of superheroes for one hour. Kids (and grown ups) would submit their heroes for consideration in the hopes of seeing their hero in print and to win a tee-shirt. In my pre-teen years, I sent several heroes in and never won a thing. I wish I could remember some of the heroes I sent in, but I'm sure I'd cringe in horror at how bad they were.

Or maybe I wouldn't. One of the fun things about it was that the heroes were basically quick, throw-away characters you'd never see again. Most had a singular power and an easy-to-draw costume. Some had lengthy, tongue-twisting names that no sane hero would pick for the long haul.

So last night, while watching a Norweigan horror movie from Netflix, I was doodling and came up with these two heroes that would have fit the Dial "H" motif pretty well. Now if I could only get that tee-shirt.
