kybearfuzz: (Comic Book Bears)

So I got up this morning feeling better, after catching a quick bug the other day. I worked out and mowed the yard, feeling a bit energized. I grabbed lunch and drove to the Cincinnati Comicon (the "Con") held in Northern KY. I had not attended this particular comic book convention before, but I had a list of comics I wanted to get and though I could grab some deals.

After spending $35 to get in and $5 for parking, I went inside, grabbed a vendor map, and started my shopping journey. And was bitterly disappointed.

The "Con" was very heavy on the creators and very light on the back issue vendors. I found a few good deals at one table, but didn't want to spend all my money in one place, so I ventured to look for others. There was only one other vendor with a huge supply of back issues, but he's local and I've already seen his goods in his store. The other handful listed as "vendors" basically had about 10-12 long boxes of comics, which is almost nothing, and certainly not enough to pay for the rental space.

I was there for maybe an hour, spent $27, stopped by Starbucks for a Frap that the barista screwed up, and went home for a nap.

The "Con" was a waste of time. The Comic Expo in two weeks is usually much more fun.

Lesson learned.

But as my mother probably would have said: "At least it got you out of the house!"

What a bummer. At least you know not to bother next year.

so what are some of the back issues you are looking for? any special Holy Grails in particular you are jonesin' for?

I think I've pretty much hit my end point on actively looking for back issues. I've completed my Flash, JLA, Green Lantern and a few other large runs. Wonder Woman back to 150 or so, and X-Men from 94 on. A big part of it is I just don't have room to get obsessed on another title, I'm sure I could easily get obsessive about starting to fill in Avengers or start moving backwards further on my Wonder Woman's but I don't dare fill another longbox with oldies. I need to thin out the collection, not add to it.

I was scrounging around looking for some backup copies of "Superboy and The Legion of Super-Heroes." I've been on a Legion kick for a few months now and I hate to drag out the boxes, so I was going to get a few extra issues for what I call my "reading box."

My newest obsession is with DC's horror comics lines from the 1970s and 80s, like "Secrets of Haunted House" and "Unexpected."

I need to do another purge of mine soon. My upstairs comic book room is getting hoarder-ish.

bummer, my last purge a few years back included a ton of Unexpected, Secrets of Haunted House etc. I would have loved to have given them to you.

I'm somewhere between 60 and 70 long boxes right now and *really* need to cut back again. At this point I'm gonna have to be a bit brutal and let go of some I'd rather keep. I think as I'm getting older I realize as much as I liked a certain book I just will never circle back to it and re-read. I am starting to look at series that ultimately never really affected the "universe" such as Primal Force, Thunderbolts, and a lot of the titles from the DC New 52 era. I'm such a competionist, I hate to get rid of say the whole run of the New 52 Catwoman when I have her other 3 series complete, but the new 52 was terrible and now that DC is being rebirthed, it probably will all be somewhat retconned out of existence in one way or another anyway. I hate getting rid of books but there is only so much room in our 3rd bedroom LOL

Curse the luck!!! :)

And your collection outshadows mine by leaps and bounds. I was never much of a completionist, which the exception of Mike Grell's "The Warlord." I loved a lot of the 1970s comic books, but most of the artwork in the issues from the 1960s, with the exception of the Legion stories in Adventure and Superboy, seemed weak.

What do you do when you purge the comics? Do you donate them or sell them?
