kybearfuzz: (Movie Buff)

Last night, a buddy of mine and I went to go see The Monuments Men. He works for a local movie theater so he gets free passes. We went to the balcony area where they have servers who come around, which is kind of cool, but also kind of distracting.

The movie itself was a tad slow, but overall okay, I thought. Toward the end of WWII, an art expert (George Clooney) assembles a team of other art experts for the US military whose job is to seek out and save various stolen art treasures from the Nazi regime. It's not really what I'd call an action film, thought there are a few moments of fighting shown. It's more a story about trying to get the art back and the problems encountered along the way. It's not terribly deep and the flow is a bit disjointed. If you expect a war film, you'll be gravely disappointed.

However, a bearded George Clooney is hot, even if he does shave it to a mustache early in the film.

While we were sitting in relative comfort in the balcony area, it was not an area immune to talkers. An older couple was behind us and they constantly kept asking "what did he say?" and "Oh, this will be trouble." It was a free movie, so I didn't shush them, but I was tempted. I often wonder if people who pay the extra fee to sit up in the balcony area expect that talking out loud is okay. It reminds me of the orange juice commercial with the young flight attendant who tells a traveler he needs to power down his computer, and his response is "... but I'm in first class..."

I didn't get to bed until late. I woke up to a FB message from a traveling buddy who asked if I was flying out at 4:50 AM. He swore he just saw me at the airport. Strangely, I get this a lot for some reason. People see me in all sorts of places where I ain't. I guess I just have one of those faces.

I've read criticism that the movie plays like an episode of Hogan's heroes about art, but I think that discounts the strong cast and the true story. "Monuments Men" wasn't intended as war film, but more of a caper film set in World War 2.

It just goes to show how different audiences can be. The theater was packed when I saw the movie and the audience applauded when it was over. Cait Blanchett's performance has remained with me.

She was good, wasn't she? One of my French professors in college was Parisian. She had certain mannerisms that were almost stereotypically French that I rendered her fascinating to me. Blanchett easily delivered the same feel for her character, which made her performance believable.

My heart sort of broke when Matt Damon's character rejected her overtures for a one night affair ...

I admired him for that actually. I know in the real world, guys overseas did that quite a bit and I'm sure she needed the comforting, but I was happy he stuck to his guns despite the temptation before him. :)
