Drawing Over the Holiday

I didn't do a heck of a lot over the holiday weekend. I've had a lot of stuff on my mind, work and other things, that put me a bit of a funk. With no movies out that I really want to see, I decided to spend most of my time working on issue #3 of the Bear Patrol.

I finished sketching the first segment, inked it over the course of several hours Saturday, and the coloring... oh the coloring.. is going to take time.

In the meanwhile, I had been working here and there on this sketch since I ran up to Columbus last month. I started it while waiting for friends for an early lunch. I pictured it as Grizzly on the beach playing volleyball. It's not finished, but, as are most things in the sketchbook from my car, it may never be. Given that I never know when it'll be done, I thought I'd post it here now.

I would love to learn more about your inking process, what materials you use etc, as I dont know much about techniques beyond pencils.

I wish I had a lot to tell you about the inking. I typically use Sharpie markers and some very fine point permanent marker pens to do the inking over a pencil sketch. I think most comic book artists tend to use the brush pens, which gives that beautiful rounded thickness to curves for depth.

Generally, mine are just markers of various point sizes. I just try to give the objects "closer" a thicker point outline and give the items in the distance the finer point. On the main object, I use finer point on the face so I can do more detailing of the eyes and such.

One day I might take a course in it to see how I'm doing everything wrong :)

Do you draw over the pencils or use a new sheet of paper and trace it?

I do ink over the pencils. I just use photocopy paper for most of the comic book work, so the ink would bleed through to the pencils. I have thought of buying a lightboard to do the tracing instead, but just haven't gotten to that point yet.

Some of my cartoons are strictly pen and paper with no pencils. I just start with an eye or a head and see where it goes.

Oh if I had a "Weird Science" computer, I'd already have a bear like that in my home. Maybe even have one for different days of the week.

Very handsome drawing ... the sort of thing that could inspire me to take up volleyball (if I weren't so bad at it).
