Late Night Phone Calls & Bagels

kybearfuzzI went to bed early last night, it's been a rough week at the office and a bit draining. About 11:30 or so, my sister called to ask questions about doing her online 1040, much to my ire. I love her dearly, I really do.
It reminded me of another late night phone call I received years ago that I love to tell about to this very day.
I was living in Kansas City and had gone to bed at my usual time, around 10:30 or so. The phone rings about midnight and I immediately jump because all I can think is that something has gone wrong at my parents or worse. On the phone is a drunken guy, probably college age because he lived at home. He told me not to be mad and that he had promised not to get drunk, but time just got away from him. He kept calling me "Dad." Eyes rolling, I tried to tell him he had gotten the wrong number, but he kept responding, "Don't be that way, Dad, I'm sorry. I need to get home, please, I can't drive this way."
Partly annoyed at being wakened and impressed for a drunk man knowing not to drive, I told him to just call a cab to get home. He replied that he didn't have any money and wanted me to come get him. I must have been waking up to come up with this reply. I told him to call a cab and take it home and that I would pay for it when he got here. "Awww... thanks Dad, I'm so sorry," he said and he hung up.
To this day I often wonder if I got this poor guy in deep trouble of if the cabbie actually took him home. I hope and pray his real Dad was there to bail him out of the fare, but I figured "Junior" would be safer that way.
On the bright side, I saw this amazingly handsome bearded bear at Panera this morning. He came in to get a dozen bagels, and he had that great country accent and blue collar mannerisms... and looked great in those jeans! And he just asked for a dozen, he didn't pick them out one by one. Honestly, it made my morning a bit. ...and it's FRIDAY!
