The Color Purple

I know it's FYFF, but I'm at work and can't really do that. I did take a pic though and there's fur in it :) I saw the photo and it reminded me of a newly discovered quirk.

When I was in high school, I didn't have many clothes. Not a sob story here, but my family was dirt poor and we made do with what we had. A large clothing budget wasn't there. I did have this purple shirt I bought that I loved. I wore it through high school, then college, and I still have it (this isn't it). I loved how the color looked with jeans.

After growing up and getting a job, I turned into what a friend coined the other day as a clothing whore. I don't think it's necessarily true, but there could be a slight psychological issue there. What I need to do is weed out the closets more often of what I don't wear.

Last night, my buddy Tim and I went to dinner and then walked around Dillard's. I found a couple of shirts I liked and we started talking about what we wear to work. When I described how I put my work clothes out and together, usually a lighter shirt with darker pants (excluding khakis and jeans), he remarked, "You mean you dress monochomatic?"

I was about to say no, but the more I thought about it, the answer tends to be yes (at least in terms of work clothes). Shades of color are easier to throw together than complimentary colors -- light green shirt with dark green pants, light blue shirt with dark blue pants, gray shirt with black pants -- I tend to do that, though not all the time. In a morning rush, such matching is easy to do. I guess I just never gave it a great deal of consideration until it was pointed out to me.

Am I alone here, or do some of you guys do that too?

Hmm, I have nothing to say on this topic. Not only is there no distinction between my work clothes and my casual clothes, I cannot even see the color of the shirt you are wearing. I would have guessed it was blue.

So let me just say that you look damn cute in that photo.

Actually, your ears might have been burning last night. I told him that I coordinated my shirts and pants in the same color, but a friend (you) coordinates his shirts and underwear colors.

What color do you see the shirt I'm wearing? I would have thought it was in your blue range still.

It looks blue to me. I think I am seeing the purple minus the red, so it's just another shade of blue.

I tend toward dark pants light shirt or light pants dark shirt. Tan and brown or green or black or dark blue, blue and gray, white and black, dark brown and maroon. I don't vary much at all, these pants are always with this shirt etc etc LOL I don't have much by way of fashion sense, matching light and dark tend to work well for me.

I keep it simple, I guess. I have found that I can convince myself something matches when it doesn't if I'm not careful. I usually try to keep some colors that I know go well together, like red/orange/yellow and brown pants, yellow with green pants, some blue with brown pants, etc. Patterns? I tend to dodge them.

In general mixing lighter and darker shades of the same color can make dressing for work easier; however, you have to be careful of the shades ... for instance ... some shades of blue ... some shades of green ... can look terrible when mixed. I have a tendency to have a full range of blue and green dress shirts, brown, yellow, rust, several white dress shirts. I have six pairs of washable dress slacks ... all neutrals. I have six sports coats. Where I break out is that I have about 125 ties. I can pull anything together through the selection of the right tie:) I know most men don't like to wear ties, but I enjoy them a lot, even with jeans and a denim shirt. Oddly, I have three pairs of shoes ... that's it.

When I put shades of green or blues together, I'm careful to not deviate from usually gradients. In other words, I don't put a blue-green shirt with dark blue pants.

And I like ties too, but I admit I don't enjoy wearing them too often. They do make me feel dressy though :)

I have to wear business dress for work so I'm usually in a suit or dress pants and jacket. I have very few solid color shirts except for polos. My best color range used to be greens and burgundy. Now that my hair has gone mostly white my better colors are in the blue and pink range. My clothes fetish is cuff links. Most of my dress shirts have French cuffs and I love wearing these shirts with jeans and dress shoes when I can.

I would gladly work at a place that requires uniforms. It's less to worry about in the morning. That's one of the reasons I grew a beard!

I actually have thought about buying a series of blue shirts and khaki pants to wear to work, so I'd not have to waste the time thinking of what to wear in the morning.

It would look strange, but it would definitely save some worry.

I would prefer that my casual clothes (cargo shorts and t shirt) WERE my work clothes, but that would be called retirement. As it is I'm glad I no longer have to choose what to wear to work. Dark blue uniform and a badge, no decision making involved.
