Go Demons!

I was listening to the radio on the way into work today and overheard this fun little tidbit of news, where a man wants to change the mascot of his son's school because of religious beliefs. The school mascot is the demon, so he didn't want to hear his innocent youth screaming "Go Demons!" at a football game. He plans to move his kid to a school with a mascot that is more family friendly (perhaps the South Park Cows), but plans to petition to have the school mascot changed anyway.

I've heard this story before, only with a different setting. My elementary school was East Ward Elementary and we were the "Green Waves." One of my favorite shirts as a kid, worn to tatters, was my green shirt with a white iron-on transfer of a giant wave. I'm not sure what was the mascot's origin, but I really enjoyed it for some reason. Green and white worked well for me. Eventually everything went red or maroon as the Redhound became my mascot in junior high and high school.

My cousins, on the other hand, went to Felts Elementary in the county whose mascot was the Blue Devils. Can you see where this is going? I remember vividly my mom having a disdain for the mascot because she felt it glorified Satan. The logo was that of a devil's head (in blue) with horns and a pointed Van Dyke beard. It looked cool on a sweatshirt.

I never remember associating the mascot with devil worship, Satan, or anything unsavory except the fact that they were a rival team. The irony is that my mom herself was a former Felts Elementary girl and I wonder what the mascot was in her day if not the same.

I think the dad in the quoted news story needs to grow up. Or maybe he's grown up a bit too much.

Anybody else have a cool mascot they remember well?

Demons have gotten there bad reputations from the Christians. They were originally just sort of go betweens for the Gods and the humans.

It is interesting that the biggest school to have the Green Wave as it's mascot is Tulane University.

My College had a unique Mascot. I went to Washburn University of Topeka which is the home of the "Fighting Ichabods." The character was a man in top hat and tailcoat. We gained that symbol because Deacon Ichabod Washburn gave the school money.
