Enjoying the Shadowbox Cabaret
Jun. 28th, 2010 09:11 amGood heavens, where the heck did the weekend go? I swear I blinked and it seemed to vanish.
The weekend was a good one. The highlight of the weekend was a Saturday night visit to the Shadowbox Cabaret at Newport on the Levee. It's a live music/sketch comedy group here in Cincinnati and Columbus. Brian (
cincycub) snagged us free passes for their current show: "Best of Shadowbox 2010."
Now I had often written off the show as something campy, etc., based on the ads I'd seen, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I was quickly identified by the server as a "Shadowbox Virgin" and I was anxious at what my initiation involved. Luckily, nothing more than enjoying the show.
The music was very impressive, the singing was amazing, and the band was incredible. Brian fell in love with the lead guitartist, I with the keyboardist and one very stocky percussionist, and we both gave the hairy-chested emcee more than one glance. Oh yeah, there were some girls on stage too. My personal favorite song of the night was a rendition of "Dirty Diana."
The sketch comedy was surprisingly good too. We watched the perils of a nerdy boy discovering that his mean sister has inheirited the "curse" every woman knows, a flashback of horror as office workers discovered the power of a TRS-80 computer, and nothing prepared me for the "West Side Story" skit with the cast members of Star Wars and Star Trek.
The show runs for the rest of the summer. I highly recommend it for the locals and anyone passing through.
