The New Teen Titans: Games by Marv Wolfman and George Perez
I was ordering some things for my mom as well as a book or two for me at Amazon and I happened to find that "The New Teen Titans: Games" is finally scheduled for release in November. The book has been in various stages of writing and art for years, so to see that it's finally coming out is a bit of a thrill.
The story takes place back in the days that Donna Troy was in her first Troia incarnation and wearing a rather cumbersome costume. At first I admit that I hated the design, mostly due to her short hair, which I thought would be too identifiable a style for a heroine with a secret identity to keep. The more I looked at it though, I grew to like it, especially with the detail provided by George Perez's skills. The gauntlets were especially cool with the lattice of the nets in the side panels, which were repeated on her boots.
However, the problem was the costume was too detailed, too much work to draw, in my opinion. Whenever someone other than Perez drew it, it just didn't look the same to me. The only other artist who seemed to put the detail into it was Phil Jimenez.
When Perez leaves a book, the incoming artist tends to alter and change the designs of any detailed costume. I recall Alan Davis changed the Scarlet Witch's gypsy outfit soon after Perez left "The Avengers." In the case of Troia, she was depowered and the costume went away, although there is some evidence that the costume was slated to be changed before the Titans storyline went into a new direction.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to "Games" coming out. I've seen some of the preliminary sketches and I think the book will be worth the wait. I look forward to seeing Perez' Troia again.
