Bear of WinterA few weeks ago, I posted an entry about an Alphonse Mucha book I found at the bookstore. I love his work and have since found a couple of other books on his art. One of his usual things to do was to paint female representations of things, such as the four seasons, gemstones, flowers, the times of the day, etc. In the responses, Ken ([livejournal.com profile] madknits) said he would like to see a bear version of the seasons.

So I decided to draw the seasons with bear representations. Each one will have a sort of mythic theme to them. This is the first of the four with [livejournal.com profile] madknits as the bear of winter.

We just talked about Mucha in my art history class. His work is still around, and being used, champagne bottles, bicycles, etc.
Great work btw.

Thank you, sir!

The fact that Mucha's work is still be used today isn't a surprise to me. I actually bought two more books on him this weekend. I wish I had his talent. I love the loops and designs of the Art Nouveau look. I tried to incorporate such things in this cartoon, but I lack the patience for it and took it out. I'm afraid it's only Mucha-esque in concept.

Oh, if the Art Professors where I went to college looked like you, I might have changed majors.

Seriously, I do wish I had taken art classes in college (even high school). I feel like I could have learned a great deal.

Heh! An essay contest, now that would be funny...

Actually, I've already selected the LJ'ers for Autumn and Summer. Spring is up in the air as I'm having trouble imagining the look.

Love it! Love the subtle, mellow expression, love the linework on the draping, and I really love the costume! Well done!

Thanks, Jeremy! :)

And I can't take credit for all the the costuming really, as I loosely copied the kilt from [livejournal.com profile] madknits' photo.

What a great idea! Much as I adore Mucha (even got to visit the museum dedicated to him in Prague about ten years ago), I've been sorry that he so seldom did men. Obviously you're making great amends ! The cartoon-graphic style goes with Mucha's poster-graphics ... he used a variety of outlines, especially wider grey ones around figures, a subtle 'stained-glass' effect.
I love it that you're using LJers for models. The color scheme and design is (unsurprisingly) beautiful.
