Apparently I made a hasty praise of the hotel and their internet access. When I got on the computer in my room when I first arrived, the system had not reset and allowed me some free access. They reset it last night and it´s a pay system. It´s a complete ripoff, charging 17 Euro (about 23 bucks) for 24 consecutive hours of access. That includes the eight hours you sleep, the eight I´ll be working and the hours for tourist stuff, exercise, bathing, etc. So it´s actually for probably two or three hours of evening access and that is just criminal. I´m using the free service downstairs, but I can´t upload pics or stay on too long. Boo!

On a good note, I did a three mile run this morning along the Tejo River here near the hotel. It was beautiful and so was the eye candy. I swear I passed a handsome muscular bear who looked just like [livejournal.com profile] mondragon. Too bad I couldn´t run and take photos at the same time!

Okay, off to lunch and touristy stuff.

Free WiFi is a big selling point. What I find ironic is that the low-end hotels are more likely to provide it rather than the high-end hotels. It's the high-end hotels that nickel-and-dime you to death. When I was in Atlanta recently, the accessing the hotel's Internet service (whether on your in-room TV or on your own laptop) cost $10 a day ... and please help yourself to that $6.00 bottle of Disani water thoughtfully set on the desk for your convenience! I even took my laptop out on the balcony to see if I could access some other public WiFi connection: NO LUCK.

On the other hand, if I went to a local Microtel and just took the MARTA light rail to and from the conference, I could've had a nice clean room with TV, air conditioning, and FREE WiFi ... and saved the taxpayers of West Virginia a bundle in the process.

Good old fashioned capitalism at work, I guess.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE POSTCARD, by the way!

Oh I never touch the minibar in these places and am usually pretty leery of things that look "free." I wondered if one of the hotels away from here was a bit more user friendly when it came to incidentials. I´ll have to remember that.

And I knew you collected postcards. Sorry I didn´t send you one from France. I completely forgot to send any from there.
