OrphanSurprisingly enough, I still haven't watched the latest "Harry Potter" movie. I decided instead to go see Orphan on Saturday with my non-LJ buddy Tim, who makes his first official mention in my journal. (Say hi to Tim everyone... Tim, quit bitching that you never make a journal entry... *joke!*)

After their third child is delivered stillborn, a young couple with a very large home decide to adopt a little girl. They are drawn to this very mature, very intelligent 9-year-old Russian girl named Esther. Because she is different from the other girls, they decide that she is the one for them. Along with their son and deaf younger daughter, they try to form a happy family.

But as the catchphrase says, "There is something wrong with Esther." Slowly, Esther starts showing her true colors, manipulating and creating divisions in the family around her. As her adopted mother starts to dig into Esther's past, she finds that Esther is certainly not the girl they thought she was.

While the plot overall isn't new, I think there are some significant twists in the movie that made it fun to watch. The young actress who plays Esther is very good, giving a very creepy and chilling performance. Peter Saarsgard plays the nice and furry father, who is the last to figure things out. I think the movie brings some original stuff to a familiar idea.

Did I enjoy the movie? Very much.
Would I see it again? Oh yeah.
Buy the movie? It's not something I'd watch repeatedly, so probably no.

I'm not sure how the film is being marketed in the US but in Canada the posters have a second tag line in addition to the "something wrong with Esther" line: "Can you keep a secret?"

There's nothing really wrong with it but it's just so random and really doesn't need to be there as the "Esther" line is just fine.

I wonder if the "Can you keep a secret?" line isn't something for the people who have already seen the movie, something to hopefully prevent them from telling other people who have yet to watch the film.
