My (new) keyboardAmong my many idiosyncrasies is this: I love to hear myself typing. It goes back to an unusual thing I had as a kid where I had an almost compulsion to press buttons. You wouldn't want to have gotten into an elevator with me as a kid. Cash registers were a fascination. The scientists on television shows would clatter around on a keyboard or a switch panel. When a button gets pushed, it causes something to happen. I think I relate this to typing. The sound means I'm getting something accomplished.

Unfortunately, my office got everyone new keyboards when we upgraded the laptops, but I held fast to the my old keyboard for auditory purposes. They're noisy and most manufacturers today are striving to make them quieter. Tuesday, my keyboard kicked the bucket. While the clack of the keys were still going strong, no words would appear on my screen. Luckily, our IT folks have a large cache of these kinds of keyboards for "just in case" emergencies. Most everyone else in the building hates them. So I think I'm set for the rest of my career as long as I can put a few of them away and the connectors are still useable.

I am such a fan of the old IBM super clicky keyboards. I have one at home AND I use one at work - torturing the coworkers. My partner has a G12 gaming keyboard, and keeps trying to convince me to upgrade, but I'll never give up my superclickster.

When I worked in a cubicle and was surrounded by co-workers, they used to make comment on my typing when I was writting reports. They weren't complaining as much as they were impressed. I can type about 70 wpm and the clatter must have sounded like I was pounding on the keyboard at times. :)

I have a so-so noisy keyboard at home, but it's on its last legs so a new one may be coming. I dread it as I am not sure how appropriately noisy the new ones are.
