kybearfuzz: (Movie Buff)

After work yesterday, I caught a matinee of The Happening.

I'll be nice enough not to spoil it for anyone who really wants to go and see it, but it makes it difficult to say anything specific about the film. Yeah, this movie has that kind of story. I will say that most of the scary things you see in the trailer happens in the first 10-15 minutes.

I will say this. The movie sucked. While I thought the plot was somewhat interesting, the writing was really weak and the acting was pathetic. Mark Wahlberg is about as convincing as a high school science teacher as Lindsay Lohan would be playing Mother Teresa. And his girl friend played by Zooey Deschanel spends most of her time with a wide, vacant look in her blue eyes that makes you think she's forgotten her lines. I don't feel like there was any real tension in this movie, despite the threat that pursued everyone.

As I got up to leave, this group of high schooler guys was leaving too. One of them exclamined, "That was it!??" Yeah, that kind of summed it up. Shyamalan keeps trying to recreate the feel of the Sixth Sense, but he keeps falling short. This movie wasn't "happening"... sorry :P I really need to stop watching his films.

Did I enjoy the movie? Not really.
Would I watch it again? If became one of those drinking game movies. Or a heckle fest. Otherwise, no.
Buy the DVD? No. If it were a Christmas present I'd ask for the receipt.

I have to admit that I was interested in seeing this one, but all of the reviews that I've read so far have been pretty negative.

There was an article in the paper today that basically said the surprise in the movie is that there IS no surprise. I was like.. uh... that's how ALL his piece-of-crap movies are. I'm not really a fan ;)

Hey Mr. Shyamalan ...

I'll probably wait for the DVD to come up on NetFlix, hopefully with extras and deleted scenes. Despite the generally poor reviews, I'm still curious about this movie, because the premise is very intriguing to me. But it's unfortunate that Mr. Shyamalan's career seems to be faltering so badly. I was really hoping this film might redeem him, but when he does commercials for the film using the fact that it's his first R-rated film as a selling point, you KNOW something's gotta be wrong.

Well thanks for saving me a few bucks - I was afraid that was going to be the case. I saw one trailer where I thought they may have said too much and after watching the trailer my thoughts were, "that's it?". Pretty lame. Sorry it cost you some valuable movie watching time.

After watching most of "Tin Man", I think that all Zooey Deschanel can do is a vacant look.
