Having the Manager Look
Jun. 4th, 2008 01:42 pmMy office is holding a training class today where one of the instructors is a good friend of mine, so I stopped in to say hi. While I stood there, one of the students came up to ask me if he should make the check for the class fee out to me. I deferred him to my friend. This sort of thing happens often to me.
When I'm at the grocery store or department store, I often have people walk up to me and ask what aisle a particular product is in or what is the store policy on returns. I usually just smile and tell them that I don't work at the store. While I was off a couple of weeks ago, I went to KMart to buy some potting soil and small plants. I was wearing a dirty tee-shirt and blue jean shorts. Still, a lady came up and asked me how much a particular plant costs and seemed upset when I politely told her that I didn't work there and had no idea. As if she didn't believe me, she said, "well, I'll not ask you anything else..." Umm.. okay...
It reminds me of a Karen Walker scene from "Will & Grace" that goes something like this: Karen asks someone to get her a martini. The guy responds, "..but I don't work here..." and Karen looks at him and says, "well, that really wasn't my question, was it?"
I guess I give off the "hi, may I help you?" vibe. And if you're cute, you just might get it.
