Wow.. I really need to pay better attention to the posting thing regarding movies. I've gotten behind again. Here's the latest list.

The best movie I've seen recently is The Orphanage. When a former orphan purchases her old orphanage home to open a school for special needs kids, strange things eventually begin to happen, resulting in the disappearance of her own son in the house. The film is dark and moody, atmospheric and disturbing, without copious gore, but included a few scenes that made me jump. It's very well written, which is by far its best attribute. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles, but they're far from distracting. I plan on seeing it again and the DVD will be worth buying.

Saturday night was an evening with the Cincinnati Movie Bears, catching a matinee of Cloverfield. No details to spoil it for anyone who has yet to see it and plan on it. I wont say it's a bad movie, but I can't say it was a great one either. The special effects were cool, but the jarring camera filming is too distracting. I didn't get sick to my stomach, but I left with a headache. Not something I plan on watching again and I think I'll skip the DVD.

Yesterday, Brian ([livejournal.com profile] cincycub) and I hit lunch and a matinee of 27 Dresses. It's very cute and funny, definitely a light hearted movie. An overachieving assistant and perpetual bridesmade, Jane (Katherine Heigl) is in love with her boss only to have her ditzy, spoiled sister sweep in and steal him away. Her sister asks for her help to plan her wedding, which is sheer torture for Jane, who is pursued by a reporter who tries to get the story about her 27 trips down the aisle as the bridesmaid. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, but I doubt I'll buy the DVD.

Today, I ran some errands and caught a matinee of Aliens vs Predator - Requiem at the dollar-house theater. It was a fun movie, good special effects, but I went in knowing it was shlock and I wasn't disappointed. It starred John Ortiz as the local sheriff and I thought he was pretty cute. The movie is not something I'd watch again, unless it was on cable. No DVD buying on this one either.
