A Week at the Movies

kybearfuzzI burned the last of my 2007 vacation time this week. It feels so odd to be off so long, but I admit I loved it. I didn't really go anywhere. I think I need to change that and actually travel to places I've not been or at least not been in a long time. I did hit the movies this week... and saw some really good stuff. Here's some quick recaps.
Monday was Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Very gory, somewhat funny, dark and twisted. I admit I loved it. I knew the story before, but the singing was new. My only real complaint was Helena Bonham Carter's singing. I am not sure if it was her accent, her voice, or both, but I could barely understand her while she sang. Johnny Depp was brutally awesome. I'd see it again, but I don't see me buying the DVD.

cubtharsis and I tried to see a preview of this the week before, but got shut out by the crowds. It was a great movie. Very funny, very touching, and Ellen Page was fantastic as the pregnant teen who finds a home for her coming kid. I'd be surprised if she doesn't win the Golden Globe. Again, I'd love to see it again, but I don't see it something I'd buy.
Wednesday was P.S. I Love You, which I've already written about. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's naked self was worth it alone.
Thursday night,cubtharsis and I made it to a showing of No Country for Old Men. It was a twisted movie. A drug deal goes bad, a man steals money, an assassin comes after him and anyone who stands in his way. So many twists to it, people get killed unexpectedly, so I was constantly guessing at the movie, all the way to the end. A bit long, but very, very good. Not one I'd purchase, but seeing it again might allow me to see more into the fuzzier parts of the story.
Friday,cincycub took me to dinner and a movie for my birthday (thanks Brian!!). We caught One Missed Call. When the cell phone rings oddly and a message from the future appears with the owner's voice, a group of college students start getting bumped off one by one. There are some nice creepy moments in this movie. Ed Burns plays the cop trying to help the current target solve the crime and Margaret Cho shows up as an uncaring cop who refuses to believe it. I'd watch it again, but not a buy for me.
In addition to the above (which is enough I'm sure), I polished off a few more B-grade horror flicks from my 50-pack compilations. With names like "Cathy's Curse," "The House of the Dead," "A Bell from Hell," and "The Demon of Ludlow," they really don't need reviews. They were terrible.. and I loved them :)
