Lars and The Real Girl

Last night, cubtharsis and I grabbed dinner and headed for a free screening of Juno. Unfortunately, when we got to the theater, there was a long line already waiting for the movie, just as I'd seen in a lot of other LJ entries. The theater told us that the movie was full, which led to a lot of groans from the crowd.

So we elected to see Lars and the Real Girl instead. We weren't disappointed. Lars Lindstrom is a very shy, quirky man who lives in the small garage apartment next to his childhood home occupied by his brother and sister-in-law. Uncomfortable around women, he ends up ordering a life-sized sex doll after seeing his co-worker looking at them online and has a delusion that she is real, introducing her as a visiting internet interest named Bianca.

Speaking little English and being wheelchair bound, Bianca is very dependent on Lars. When his family talks to their doctor about him, the doctor tell them to go along with the delusion and treat Bianca like a real woman. With the help of their friends, the entire town goes along with them.

There are some genuinely funny moments in this movie. Ryan Gosling is incredible, playing the role of Lars to the point where if you were in the town, you'd want to help him too. I think we were both very surprised how much we liked the movie. Sadly, for the Cincinnati locals, last night was the final showing at the Esquire, but I can't imagine the DVD isn't too far away.

In addition to the movie, we also saw a preview for Juno, and I have to see that one too. It looks hysterically funny.

Did I enjoy the movie? Loved it.
Would I see it again? Definitely.
Buy the DVD? I plan on it.

A few weeks ago Anna and I were trying to find something different to go see, and we ended up seeing "Lars and the Real Girl". We both really loved the movie. Glad you did too.

Yeah it was. I think that's why we liked it so much.
"Juno" is high on my list of movies to see as well.

I'm sorry to hear that. We have two small arthouse/independent film theaters here, but even so we miss some of the good ones too. Hopefully it'll be out on DVD in the near future.

LOL.. well, there is a difference between getting the passes.. and getting into them...

For I Am Legend, cincy_dave gave a donation for MS at a booth when we went to see Enchanted a couple of weeks ago. The lady gave him the passes and he passed them to me.

As for Juno, I went to Citybeat.com and registered for them and won. Apparently they gave out a LOT of them, because only a handful of folks actually got into the movie. I knew something had to be up when I went to pick up the passes at the Citybeat office and they didn't even check my name, the lady at the desk just handed them to me.

From what I've heard, they always give out way more passes than there are seats, so if you want to get in, you have to get there early. Last night cemented that fact, though our back-up movie was really good.

Haha, well yeah that's what I meant. It just seems like you've had a lot of them lately but maybe it was just these two ;)

And yes, that is ALWAYS the case because a lot of people just get passes but don't show up, so they intentionally give out way more than they have seats available. Definitely always get there early :)

We saw Juno when it opened here last Friday, and the theater was absolutely packed. It was definitely worth braving the crowds to see it, though.

I thought that Lars and the Real Girl was so sweet. I was expecting one of those gross-out comedies when I first heard the premise of the movie.

The more I read about Lars, the more I wanted to see it, but it only played in the area at one theater, so I kept forgetting about it. I really thought it was sweet too.

I can't wait to see Juno. The previews look wonderful.
