Last night the Cincinnati Movie Bears met up for Friday night showing of The Golden Compass.

Based on the book of the same name, the movie deals with a young orphan girl is entrusted with a magic compass that can foretell the future, she joins forces with other races (including flying witches and talking polar bears) in her parallel world to discover who is kidnapping children and what is their link to the governing religious order.

I loved the action and special effects of the movie. Nicole Kidman makes a great villian, sweet and endearing while being menacing at the same time. I was thinking in my mind, "no wire hangers" for some reason. I also loved the shape-shifting Pan, the daemon of the main character, who shifts from a ferret to a cat to anything else. The only real negative that I have about the movie is that it seemed a bit long, even though it was under two hours. The movie was set up for continuation into the sequels.

Did I enjoy it? Very much.
Would I see it again? Yes.
Buy the DVD? Yes.

I just started reading it. It's very anti-religon. There's a meme on the movie website.
