After the birthday party, I needed some time for myself, so I went to a very late showing of Grindhouse. The movie is inspired by the very cheap, very over-the-top shlock movies of the 1960's and 1970's.

Planet Terror
Rose McGowan as the one-legged, motorcycle-riding
zombie fighter in Planet Terror

The first film was Planet Terror. When a black market type sale of an unknown gas goes sour and gets released, the local population of a town become infected with strange boils, which eventually turns them into zombies that attack and eat the uninfected. A rag tag team of people manage to fight the masses with some surprising uses of firearms. The movie is very action-packed and the acting is purposefully heavy-handed with bad lines. The movie is given a scratchy look in some places, along with some incidences of "missing reels" that jump the story forward a bit.

After the first movie segment, there are made-up previews in the same vein of the main films. With titles like "Werewolf Women of the SS" and "Thanksgiving" (a Halloween-type slasher film), how could I not want to watch these films??

Death Proof
Kurt Russell stars as a stuntman with a dark side in Death Proof

The second film is Death Proof. A group of women led by a local radio personality have a night on the town where they encounter a stuntman with a car that is supposedly "death proof," enhanced to inflict damage but protect the person in the driver's seat. I wont give anything away, but there are a lot of car crashing and chasing. Again, the movie has the scratchy look for parts of the film. This segment starts a bit slower than the first, but takes off when the car chases begin.

Overall, I really enjoyed the movies. The movies they are based on were pure shlock because the makers couldn't afford better, these are that way on purpose. The movies are full of intentional humor. I wouldn't say it's parody of the 70's films, but more an homage to them. Just be warned, it is a lengthy night at the movies, the two films together are over three hours long.

Did I enjoy the movie(s)? Very much, though I think I liked Planet Terror more of the two.
Would I see it again? Yeah.
Buy the DVD? I think so.

The first half of "Grindhouse" was alot of fun. Allthough I don't think any 70's exploitation film had cell phones. he he
Anyway, the second half done by Tarrentino could have been about a half an hour shorter. He seems to like to bore us with needless conversation between his characters. The best fake trailor was the one called "Don't", and I wouldn't mind watching "thanksgiving" as well.
