Movies and Movies and More Movies...

I've gotten a bit behind on my movie reviewing stuff. I've seen three in the past week, here are the quickies.
The Messengers was a refreshing horror movie. When a city family moves into an abandoned farm, their young daughter finds out that the previous owners didn't actually leave the property, exisiting now as spirits that only her toddler brother can see. Her parents believe she's just miserable from the move, not realizing that the spirits are attacking their daughter in their new home. It's actually very creepy with very little gore, some great atmosphere, and the acting is good thanks to a decent cast. I did enjoy it, would see it again, and buy the DVD.
Hannibal Rising tells the story of how Hannibal Lector became the future serial killer from Silence of the Lambs. After his parents are killed during a WWII attack, Hannibal and his sister are tormented by Russian soldiers. After he loses his sister, Hannibal escapes to France where as a medical student he begins to exact his revenge on the Russian soldiers who murdered his sister. It's a very grim story, but the lead does an excellent job conveying a very creepy young Lector. It's gory, but that's to be expected. I enjoyed this one too and I'd see it again. Not sure I'd buy it though.
Epic Movie was the first movie watched by the Cincinnati Movie Bears Yahoo! Group. We had a decent turn out. The movie pretty much sucked, but I had already heard this from
queensheba, so I had low expectations. There are some funny scenes, but the mixed movie plots get old after a while. Some good eye candy is present though. I think Kal Penn is cute and he apparently has some chest fur. There is also a soapy dancing pirate bear and the Borat spoof guy has a nice furry chest and butt. Yeah, the best thing I can say about it is the eye candy. I enjoyed myself, but mainly because of the company, not so much the movie. I'd likely not pay to see it again. And I'd buy it from the Wal-Mart $5 bin only to find the cute soapy pirate guy again in slow motion and pausing.
