Birthdays, Rosemary & Thyme

I guess I should also say "Happy Mardi Gras" too... let the flashing commence... or not... :)
In the summer of 2003 I made my first trip overseas. Luckily, my first stop was in England. I was thankful as it made things easier my first time without the pesky language barrier getting in the way.
One evening, during one of my weeks in a small English village with little to do at night, I camped out to watch the BBC in my hotel room. I love BBC America and most British comedies and dramas, so this was a good thing.
That night I ended up catching the series premiere of "Rosemary & Thyme," a new detective series that combined Britain's love of gardening with crime drama. Now, at first, I thought the premise sounded silly, but certainly no worse than what we Americans have put on the television. The premiere introduced Laura Thyme, a former police officer who gave up her career to get married only to have her police officer husband dump her years later for a younger woman. As she leaves her home to visit friends and recover, she meets Rosemary Boxer, a PhD botanist who has just been let go from her position at the local university after 18 years. The two meet at a friend's local estate where someone dies, someone is slowly being killed, and a witch is roaming the grounds with a knife.
I really enjoyed watching that first episode and was sad that I'd likely not get to see the rest as I didn't think this show would make it across the pond. Thankfully, the show gained enough popularity that it is on its third season and PBS started broadcasting them over here. During what I am calling the "DVD Purchase Frenzy of 2006," I ended up ordering the first season. It showed up a couple of days ago and got to rewatch the premiere last night and it was as good as I remembered.
