Still on the Road in EKY
Jan. 11th, 2006 04:47 pmI left Ashland and drove the meandering roads of Eastern Kentucky from one small town to another. I kept my small digital camera in the car for any sights of interest along the way. I always know I'm in the country by the things I see and hear everywhere. In some cases it's funny, but it can also be a bit scary.

REALLY Small Post Office
I spotted this place along the way. I was amazed how tiny this post office was. It's an honest-to-goodness post office. The hours posted on the doors are "Monday through Saturday 8:00 to 10:00," so it's only open limited hours. The other little sign states that this is a smoke-free building.

Li'l Abner Motel -- Where Daisy Mae Will Cook Ya Breakfast
I thought this sign for a motel was a hoot. So much that I had to snap a photo of it. You should be careful of laughing at these things, karma paid me back by making me stay at "Abner's Motel" in Stanford, KY last night. Abner's is Li'l Abner's other location and was the ONLY place to stay there. It wasn't much, but it was clean. Being the only motel in town, I guess it serves as both the "no-tell, motel" and the only "4-star" in the town.
When I asked the lady at the front desk, who I'm sure was Mrs. Abner, if the rooms had internet access, she replied that "No, I think most people bring their own internet with them..." Umm... okay... :D
I did get the chance to stop by my college roommate's house. He lives a few miles up the road from Stanford. He's going gray, but is still a very handsome bear of a guy. He and his lovely wife now have FOUR kids, three well-behaved boys and one brand-new baby girl. It makes me feel very old. It was good to see him again.

An Ale-8-One Soft Drink Machine
I always know when I'm in the Mount Sterling, KY area because I see the Ale-8-One machines everywhere instead of the usual Coca-Cola and Pepsi machines. Ale-8-One (or "A Late One") is a regional soft drink, like a flat moutain dew, but full of sugar and tons of caffeine. They got me through a lot of nights in college. There is a diet version, but I can't imagine it would taste all that great.

Welcome to Gay Road in Eastern KY
I saw this street sign in a small KY town. It was not paved with yellow bricks and I didn't see Judy Garland.
Other points of interest:
And from the "it's a small world" department, I was walking into Applebee's in Mt. Sterling, KY today for lunch only to be met by
thespisgeoff on his way out. He's doing shows in the area it seems.. and isn't feeling well. Hope all went well...
Luckily, I'm staying at a hotel tonight where they have wireless internet.. because I forgot to bring mine with me. :)

Other points of interest:
- I drove through Bruin, KY and saw the "Bruin Body Shoppe." I wonder if that's where they get the burly bears in shape :)
- Overheard on the radio: "There will be a coon hunt this weekend..."
- The Primative Baptist Church... 'nuff said
- I was waited on at a McDonald's by a server named "Bunny"
- On a morning radio show, there was a old lady calling in to complain that the TV station affiliated with the radio station had removed her favorite show, "Walker, Texas Ranger." It went something like this.... "Ah'm callin' in to complain to the Programmin' Departmunt. You've taken awf mah shows on Saturday nights. Ah want Walker, not the Jap-AN-ease Olympics you all replaced it with. Put Walker ohn!"
