Hanging in Ashland, KY

My first road trip of the year has me all the way on the eastern end of the Commonwealth, visiting the rather country Ashland, KY, which is a stones-throw away from West Virginia and Ohio. The town boasts being the birthplace of the Judds (you may have heard of Wynonna and Ashley), Chuck Woolery, the game show host, and the man who put mullets on the map, Billy Ray Cyrus.
I got here early and ate some lunch. After my work here, I went shopping for some things I naturally forgot to pack and then spent over an hour trying to find the hotels around here. An entire list from Yahoo! Yellow Pages and I couldn't find hardly any of them. I finally had to get help from the local mall's information desk to find the local Best Western. One strange thing I've noticed, I've ran into THREE people here with severe stuttering problems. One I can understand, but three struck me as rather unusual.
After a workout in the hotel gym, I showered and went to the Skyline Chili across the street and saw this striking view of what I think is an iron works down the hill. I had to grab my camera and try to capture it. After playing with the settings of my digital camera, I finally got this shot. I only wish I had captured the blue of the fiery plume...

The nearby iron works at night...
Well, I'm off to my next destination tomorrow. Not sure what the internet availability in the smaller towns will be like, so I may not post again until Friday when I get home....

Date: 2006-01-10 02:44 pm (UTC)Several months ago I drove to Ashland with a friend. It was just a spur-of-the-moment day trip, takes about 90 minutes from Charleston. We ate at a local Waffle House (which I really liked ... except for the flies), and I saw the grand old Paramount Theater. I'd like to go to a show there sometime. Their website is:
