I picked up my comic books from the local shop today. On my way out I picked up the Comic Shop News freebie and noticed the cover. The Golden Age Superman fighting the Gentleman Ghost. I took a long look at the artwork below and nearly screamed like an excited school girl. It's the cover of JSA #82 by George Perez.

JSA #82 Cover
The Golden Age Superman versus the Gentleman Ghost, JSA #82 cover

The inside story about the upcoming issues, beginning in February, is just as good. Paul Levitz will write a six-issue stretch of the comic with George Perez penciling the issues. It definitely reminds me of comics of my youth.

The cover does make me wonder about the end result of DC's current Infinite Crisis storyline. Apparently, JSA #82 will be a story with the Golden Age Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Three characters I thought were forever gone from DC stories. I am very much looking forward to this.

For those of you who want to see the artwork preview pages for this issue can find them here. It's a four page PDF file.

Oh, and one last thing, does anyone know what has happened to fellow comic book guy [livejournal.com profile] xlgmeat? He's not posted in a while. Just curious.

I think Goerge Perez is the bomb. I loved him on his initial run in the revamped Wonder Woman.

Oh, I know the feeling. I loved his work on Wonder Woman, he did such awesome work there :)

I miss Crossgen partly because he wouldn't be working on their books anymore.

This is way cool... but the story focuses on the golden age Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman... How come the cover has golden age Supes and Bats, and then Power Girl??? I gotta admit, seeing the golden age Batman there on the cover is pretty nifty too.

In any case... it's pretty exciting. I miss the old Earth 2 stories.

I think that the story must be a flashback tale. That's what I get from the preview pages :)

I do miss them too....

yeah, would have to be a flashback tale, but that's why I'm confused why Power Girl would be on the cover... the Golden Age Bats had long retired by the time she showed up, and then he died very shortly after.

YAY for being this excited over the things going on in comics of late :)

Oh, this is bringing back memories of my teen years, I loved the JLA/JSA team-ups each summer :)

I couldn't agree more. This arc will be one of those I have to have for my own collection since Owen gets JSA and I read his copy. It seems more and more lately there are books I just can't not have in my collection, like the recent JLA arcs and the current JSA Classified arc. Sometimes it's rough splitting books between us, LOL.

Anyway, I can't wait to read this arc. All the latest rumors I've heard indicate that this is the biggest indicator of where the DCU is heading with Crisis. Basically back to a more streamlined multi-verse, with JSA being on a separate earth than the JLA but with the ability to crossover when desired. But, that is just the rumor though. I just wonder if that means they will focus certain books from Batman & Superman families on the "new" worlds, like making the Batman Classified and Superman Classified books about Earth 2?

ya know... I am VERY torn on how I'd like to see Crisis end up. Although I loved the old Earth 1 Earth 2 stories, I also really love the legacy of heroes thing that DC has created. I really enjoy things such as the legacy of the Flash being passed down from Jay to Barry to Wally (to Bart from what I hear). Although it all had a rough start, I've truly gotten to like the DCU the way it is. Alan Scott handing over the reigns of Gotham City to Bruce Wayne, even Hippolyta being the Wonder Woman of the 40's. I'd hate to see that lost once again.

I did love the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline and how it recharged the DC Universe, despite getting rid of some of my favorite heroes of the Golden Age.

However, I have to admit that making Hippolyta the WWII Wonder Woman was one thing I didn't enjoy that much. I think I would have preferred Diana to have gone back in time herself to be the Golden Age Wonder Woman (it would have even made sense from the TV series with both being Diana).

I wonder if things had worked out better if they had gone with the original plan of having all the earths combined at the end of Crisis, but have everyone remember they had been separate previously. That way they could retain the history they had built but still start anew. We'll never know I spose.

And I do agree that it would have been cooler if it had been Diana thrown back into WW II, but I have to admit I like the difference in Polly's attitude too.

Can't wait to see what happens next, that's for sure :)

I'm torn about all that as well. I love the sense of heroic legacy that Dc created post-Crisis. It made the DCu far more meaningful and special than anything Marvel had going IMO. But, I really love the old days with the old JLA/JSA annual crossovers and Golden Age Batman and Superman. I'd be so torn if I was in change...there has to be some way to have it all, but maybe not having all the old stuff makes it that much more dear to us, eh?

I guess I get a bit of an odd feeling when I read the old JLA/JSA team ups. It makes me feel like these stories don't really exist anymore in the new post-Crisis continuity. I think erasing the history, in retrospect, was not the best idea, even though it was well handled.
