A new shopping area has opened up near my house. They have some great restaurants, upscale shopping (which I'll likely not patronize often), and a Borders! The last makes me the most happy because I love bookstores and I can check the store's inventory online and get discount coupons in the mail. I've already spent a good chunk of money there on DVD's this weekend.

I bought the DVD box set of Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a sort of X-Files precursor from the early-to-mid 1970's starring Darren McGavin as the reporter who finds himself often investigating the supernatural. It has a great mix of comedy and horror, something I think the new Night Stalker series lacks. It only lasted for a couple of seasons, but I think it would have done well if they hadn't canceled it. It has a cult following of sorts. And Darren McGavin is a nice furry guy as I found out from the episode "The Ripper."

I'm really here to find the killer...

Kolchak investigates a massage parlor and shows some skin...

One of the other movies I bought this weekend was Bram Stoker's The Mummy, found in the bargain bin while out and about. The movie is pretty much independent junk, but it stars Richard Karn in a supporting role. It's one of the few chances to see him shirtless. I snagged a screen capture for those who are interested to see it.

Ah.. Al Borland fur

Richard Karn also shows some skin...

Ah, he is dreamy, isn't he? :)

If only Richard knew who his real fans were. We'd buy just about anything with him showing some skin.

I seem to remember him being made aware of his gay male fans. There was a bear club somewhere that made him an honorary member and him being very good natured and accepting of it. My memory is too sketchy to give any more details -- this was probably 10 years ago. He is incredibly dreamy and I'm told he is just as sweet in person.

Well, he may be one of the few stars who embraces having a gay audience who appreciates him. I will always picture him being like Al Borland, sweet and cuddly :)

Oh! He's... *waves hands* Al from 'Home Improvement'!

Duh!

He's a local guy, too, from what I understand. Well, by "local" I mean "near Seattle".

I caught them on the Sci-Fi Channel (and still can on occasion) and I just loved the low budget feel of them. :)

damn... first time I've seen a pic of Richard Karn shirtless. He's so hot. He needs to do more, with less on :)

I've heard that he did some shirtless stuff on "Home Improvement," but I never saw it. When I saw him in this some years ago, I nearly fell over... very woofy :)

I had no idea who Richard Karn is... I do now however.

I loved Kolchak, way back when. I might have to pick up that set.

Kolchak is very worth it, in my opinion. It's about $35-40 for 20 episodes :)

I also meant to get the DVD set of the two TV movies, but I keep forgetting.

Did Darren McGavin play Murphy Brown's dad? I can't remember.

Oh yeah, he did play "Bill Brown" on Murphy Brown, his sparing matches with her mother was hilarious. :)

Thanks! I always thought that Richard Karn would be furrier, but that's ok. If my plan to meet and seduce him when he was in Gainesville had worked, I would not have been disappointed.

I thought he'd be hairier too, but I do like what he has :)

If you had seduced him, you had best have gotten photos for the masses :D

sci-fi would run the old kolchak's all the time when i first got tivo. so i got to see them all over again in the last year. i didn't realize they were coming out on dvd. that's probably why they stopped airing them.

but Darren McGavin actually appeared as a retired newspaper reported in the x-files. i don't remember if the character was called kolchak or not.

i've got a couple episodes of the new kolchak waiting for me to watch, but haven't had the time.

Actually Sci-Fi still runs them, they had a mini-block of them on this past Thursday, it's what sparked me to see if the DVD box set was out.

According to the IMDB, it was a different character on the X-Files episodes.

I've seen a couple of the new series, but it doesn't have the same feel as the original.

Richard Karn is very woofy!

And I've also heard the story that he knows how the bear community loves him. And that he is OK with that. Pretty cool.

Ah, I admire guys who have that much self-confidence to be okay with being a gay lust object.

Some serious eyelashes, too! Those makeup queens sure know their mascara!

Actually, a lot of burly men have nice eyelashes. I've heard women in my office make comment on it before, how jealous that Joe Schmoe has naturally thick eyelashes or something.
