kybearfuzz: (Movie Buff)
It was another double-feature sort of weekend for me. After the hectic work week I've had I was more than happy to sit in a theater and relax.

I saw 1408 on Friday after work. John Cusack plays a writer who spends the night in various haunted hotels and writes about them. When a postcard warning him NOT to stay in room 1408 in a NY hotel arrives, he takes the challenge, despite the best efforts of the hotel manager, played by Samuel L. Jackson, to keep him from doing so. After finally checking in to the room, little things begin to happen that eventually leads to much more horrific things as the room is "F#@king Evil" per Jackson's character. The movie has some really inspired chills that work well, but overall the movie felt a bit like a made-for-TV flick. John Cusack does drama really well, but he does comedy much better.

My plans for Saturday fell through so I hit the movies again solo to see Evan Almighty. Steve Carrel plays Evan Baxter who is a newly elected junior congressman and moves his family to the DC area to start work. With a new huge office and a new huge home, he begins to settle in until an unexpected package arrives full of tools in response to his prayer to God to "change the world." As lumber shows up, God (played wonderfully by Morgan Freeman) appears and tells him to build an ark as a flood is coming. As Evan begins to change physically, he has to juggle his new white-bread job and his new task of ark-builder. I liked this movie, Steve Carrel is very funny and looks good bearded (and nearly naked in one scene -- WOOF!). It's a bit cheesy, but perfect if you're looking for light-heartedness.

Did I enjoy the movie(s)? Yes.
Watch them again? Evan I would.
Buy the DVD? Evan is a maybe, 1408 is a no.
