Saturday Out and About and a Movie
Apr. 21st, 2007 10:39 pmBrian (
cincycub) and I made our way to the newly renovated Universal Grill for dinner tonight. I didn't know that the restaurant had been changing their dining room, so I was curious to see it.
Apparently the renovation goes beyond just its appearance. Gone are the metal lunchboxes strung across the ceiling, the comic book posters on the wall, televisions in the corner, and the Joan table and accompanying celebrity Joan photos and posters. In their place are tasteful, artsy framed posters and plain orange walls, mood lighting, and candles on the table. The only kitschy thing left there is Joan the hostess, and I doubt she can carry it all by herself. The food has changed as well, gone are the various burgers with wonderful descriptions, now replaced with an overpriced menu of mainly seafood (gag!) dishes. I guess the gay and fun clientelle wasn't sufficient for the restaurant so now they want to be upscale and respectable. I am not sure it will do well and I'm disappointed we've lost a restaurant I used to consider a great and comfortable place to hang out and have dinner.
After dinner we grabbed Graeters ice cream and then drove to the Levee. Having seen most of the movies showing, we elected to see In the Land of Women. Yeah, it's a chick flick, as was apparent with the 90% female audience. It starts Adam Brody, Meg Ryan and Olympia Dukakis, the latter of whom steals nearly every scene she is in. I wont go into a review of it, as it was a cute flick, but not one I see appealing to the masses (or maybe it will). The teenage girls behind us kept having a fangasm whenever Adam Brody was in a scene. It was kinda cute, not as annoying as I usually find talking in the movies. Her low "Ohhhhh...." was funny...
After the movie, Brian and I were stopped by a bachelorette party scavenger hunt group needing pictures of dancing men. I did my best Saturday Night Fever pose and now wait for it to turn up on the internet at some point in the future. I hope they win.
