Sorry about the multiple posts, but I just overheard this and had to share.

One of our student workers was on the phone with her mom and asked, "Mom is a quarter of an hour like a 1/3 of an hour?"

I hope she figures it out quickly, she has to make it to her COLLEGE classes at noon.

*Shakes head and rolls eyes*

OMG! I have a vision of Elle Woods from Legally Blonde saying something like that.

I really wonder about some college kids. When I taught at a community college, I had students complain because I expected them to know how many days there were in a month.

That is scary. We have a girl here at work that thought a quarter past meant 25 after.

As if I wasn't frightened enough of the upcoming generation.

There's only so much one can blame on the school system (so here's another). What bothers me most is that the marginal kids just get handed on down the line. No one tries to help them because no one wants to be burdened. Little Suzie's grade 2 teacher noticed she wasn't catching on with fractions, but she did well enough with the other stuff ... and that legacy gets passed to the next teacher.

It's a shame no one really notices this until the kids hit the "real world" and it's already too late because they already hold positions as heads of state.

I have an online friend who teaches math at the college level....and when he asked for the lowest common denominator for the following, he got some interesting answers....this was one.

6:36

The answer the student wrote was...
6:36 = 1

Poor Lee comes into our chat frequently, mostly to bang his head on his desk so at least *some* people with sense will sympathize.

The future is in serious trouble. ....of the Apocolyptic kind, if you catch my drift. :(
