Supernatural
Sep. 20th, 2005 09:26 pmI admit, for better or worse, I like watching the WB. The network that produced Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Gilmore Girls, and Smallville appeals to me, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on new shows. I'm not as much a fan of the comedies as I am of the adventure and supernatural shows.
I was curious about Supernatural. Not because of the two leads, neither of whom I am that impressed by, but because of the subject nature. I love a good ghost story. I also love urban legends. This show seems to be dealing with both. The first episode dealt with the story of the ghostly female hitchhiker on the side of the road wanting a lift home. The pilot deviated a bit from there, but it was a very creepy episode. Tonight's story about the Wendigo, a cannibalistic monster in the forest, had some eerie moments too (and it's only half over as I write this).
I don't think it will reach the cult status of Buffy, but its entertaining...

Date: 2005-09-21 05:31 pm (UTC)The acting? Pretty damn good. I was surprised. But the show felt like it should have only been a half hour instead of a full hour. It just draaaaaaaagged.
Me: "Ugh, I might give this one more episode, but I dunno. It feels like a slow video game."
Nick: "Final Fantasy?"
Me: "Yes! Yak, yak, yak, overdramatic talk, blah, blah... SHOOT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!.... yak, yak, zzzzzz....."
There was no logic whatsoever either. They explained what the Wendigo was... but not why it was there, way out of where it "usually" is. There's no background. It's just generally accepted that "It's here, and we have to kill it." This is the same thing that always bothered me about Buffy. Plot holes bother me, and the hugest one was at the end of the show: if the Wendigo moves so fast, why did it have such a hard time catching up to the three siblings and the younger hunter, especially when one of them was limping? It may seem like a little thing, but it was an important piece to the climax of the story, and it just didn't make sense.
I'll watch one or two more... but if this continues, bleh. Forget it.
