Booted off the island..?

When I was 8 or 9, the CBS Late Movie was about a society of athletes who was promised to go to America only to find out they were clones whose organs were meant for harvesting. That 1979 movie was called Clonus. The same creepy plot was essentially used (but not a remake) into The Island, and I think its much better.

Ewan McGregor is great as always (and I think has quite a nice body) and I honestly think that Scarlett Johannson is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen. Not sure what it is about her, but she seems to be a very natural beauty and she does some pretty darn good action scenes. The movie starts a bit slow, but once the action starts, it's pretty much non-stop, and the car wrecks makes you think of the Matrix movies.

In addition to the movie, I was treated to some surprising previews of a remake of The Fog and the new Jodie Foster thriller Flightplan. I'm not sure how I feel about The Fog remake as it's one of my favorite horror movies, but I'll reserve judgment until I see it. And the new Jodie Foster movie looks very intriguing.

I dunno, Mark.

I'm really, REALLY skeptical about Michael Bay. I thought "Armageddon" was one of the most RIDICULOUS movies I had ever seen. In all the interviews with him that I've read, he goes on and on about how much he hates snobbish movie critics, how much he just wants to make exciting popcorn movies, yadda yadda yadda, and that's OK, it's obviously made him a very rich man. But I think I'll pass on this one.

The new Jodie Foster flick, "FlightPlan," looks promising. I admire her as an actress, and I'll bet she could just kick herself for refusing to reprise Clarice Starling in "Hannibal." I enjoyed her in "Panic Room."

As for the remake of "The Fog," rumour has it that they want to keep it PG-13. Doesn't that just FIGURE? Horror films these days are so lame, the producers are so determined to hold onto the kiddies and the adolescents at the expense of mature adults.

Well, I enjoyed The Island, but I tend not to go on about artistic merits as long as I enjoyed myself.

I think Hannibal would have been a much better movie with Jodie Foster in it, but I thought Julianne Moore did a decent job imitating her. I think it would be hard for Jodie to follow up on an Oscar winning performance in Silence of the Lambs.

And I love The Fog, which originally was rated "R" even though there was no nudity and very little actual gore. In fact, I think by today's movie standards, the movie would have garnered a "PG-13" rating. So maybe the remake having that rating wouldn't be so bad. The previews looked pretty good and I expect they'll add more special effects that weren't available back in the original.. although they still send chills up my spine when I watch it :)
