I meant to post this on Sunday, but got busy. While working on my computer last Sunday, I was flipping through some news channels on TV, ended up catching part of a special on MSNBC or something about religion and politics and the wave of Evangelicals.

The message in it didn't surprise me too much, as most of them are religious nuts anyway, but what did disturb me was this one family that was profiled. They had this little red-headed daughter, cute as an angel, but the religious bile that spewed forth from this child was harrowing. I understand the idea of being saved, accepting Jesus as your savior, but this little girl was talking about how people of other faiths were automatically going to hell because they didn't believe as she does. Her parents were just as frightening. The mother was hoping for the end of the world soon, saying that she'd see it in her lifetime. The sheer intolerance that radiated from this family actually sent chills up my spine.

If only the saved are going to Heaven (which apparently are only the Southern Baptists), Hell is going to be a bit crowded with all the Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, Buddhists, etc. I guess I feel sorry for the little girl the most, to be so completely brainwashed and messed up so early in life. Growing up in a somewhat less involved Southern Baptist household, I know there is hope.

Friend told me that he had watched that show and had come to the conclusion that Evangelicals were part of a massive cult. They do have some cult-like features, to be sure.

Yep, I feel sorry for the little girl too.

A cult is a fairly good description, a group where independent thought is not allowed or encouraged.

I don't really consider myself a Christian, but if Christ did exist and was the Savior, I think a lot of his followers are misinterpreting him BIG TIME.

Well, considering that every denomination says that if you don't believe as we do, you are going to heck, the hot place below is going to be standing room only. I do believe in God, but I refuse to beat people up with it.

William Brann once said, "the trouble with our Texas Baptists is that we do not hold them under water long enough" -- I've heard Molly Ivins use that quote and it always cracks me up. Today I think it would be safe to say none of these fanatics regardless of geography are being held under the water near long enough.

And this gave us the famous quote and premise to make a movie like Dawn of the Dead :)

Heh... Sounds like the South Park movie... With Heaven having a small fraction of the population of Hell... And then a later episode... Where groups were arguing with an angel at the gate about which religion was "the right one".
