I think of a good scary movie like a roller coaster ride, with the exception that you shouldn't see the thrilling bits coming. It's fun to get tense and feel that rush in a safe setting.
I've always been fascinated by scary movies, supernatural stuff, etc. Halloween is my favorite time of year. However, a good horror movie should have more than just slash and kill moments in it. A good movie develops, makes the viewer actually care and hope that the victims will get away, and allows the viewer to cheer when a victim gets the better of the killer.
The newest trend in horror is that all the teenagers, college students, camp counselors get killed off and the killer succeeds and is left at the end. I don't prefer that. I like when one or more makes it to safety or defeats the monster, but that's the superhero part of me I think.
