Deleted my last rant.. trying to be more positive these days.

Last night's baking event reminded me how powerful the senses can be. Smells initiate forgotten memories, tastes remind you of younger days, etc. Here are a few rainy day questions on that theme...

What scent triggers thoughts of your dad?
Strangely, Listerine! My dad always used to kiss us kids good night before he left for work (Dad worked nights). He always had showered and gargled before he left for work, so I always remember that smell when he said good night.

What scent makes you think of your mom?
Even stranger, breaking of fresh green beans. It was always something we did on the front porch in the summer and fall and it has a sweet aroma that reminds me of breaking them with mom.

What scent do you like the most but rarely have around?
Two of them... pipe tobacco and coffee. My grandfather used to smoke a pipe when I was a kid and that odor was always very sweet and kind of soothing. I've always loved the smell of brewing coffee, even though I don't really like the taste.

What odor or smell let's you know that summer is here?
Easy one... a freshly cut lawn!

What smell can't you tolerate?
Two again.. tuna, which reminds me of my work in Kansas City, doing mercury analysis on seafood, and white hominy. White hominy is soaked and bleached in something that makes me gag.
