Various Thanksgiving Moments
Nov. 25th, 2010 07:26 pmFirst, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I hope that everyone has traveled safely if they traveled and can unbutton their britches to relieve the pressure from eating way too much. I certainly know that feeling, thankfully. I've been to my hometown and back in the last two days. There have been a few fun little things happen over the days, which made it a great time.
----------------------------------------------
The drive home was sunny and uneventful, which is a great thing. Mom was in good spirits and I effectively wore her out with a lengthy shopping afternoon. I found a purple plaid shirt that is almost identical to the one I bought and wore in high school. I loved that shirt and to find a near copy now makes me giddy. I like purple.
----------------------------------------------
Last night my sister was making a lemon cake. She's always good at making sure everyone's favorite dessert is present. So there was a pecan pie for me and a chocolate cream pie for my nephew. The twin's favorite is lemon meringue pie, so the lemon cake puzzled me.
"You're not making lemon pie for the golden child?" I asked.
"I don't know how to make the pie, so the cake will have to do," she replied.
So for the rest of the evening, I made fake crying, shuffling noises, telling her how much she doesn't apparently love the golden child.
"Boo Hoo! Squish! Squish! (with appropriate Ab Fab drawing of tears on my face)," I would do behind her when she wasn't expecting it, quivering my lip when she turned around. She laughed.
... so naturally I did this most of the night and the next day to her. She's going to smother me in my sleep someday.
----------------------------------------------
I ran 4.5 miles on my old high school track this morning. I was shocked that it was 65 degrees at 8 AM. It felt good.
Afterward, I drove to McDonalds to get breakfast for everyone still sleeping at my sister's house. I drove up behind another car at the drive through. When the car pulled forward, I came to the speaker and it said, "Welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?"
The breakfast menu wasn't up, so I curiously asked if they were serving breakfast and got no answer. I sat there for another minute trying to get the silly girl's attention and finally drove around to the window.
A local (and cute) police officer pulled up next to me and told me that place was closed and that the drive-thru voice was a recording. I felt like an idiot and laughingly told him so. He smiled, I melted, he drove off.
----------------------------------------------
Thanksgiving dinner, which we ate at 2 PM, was phenomenal. Turkey, ham, cornbread stuffing, broccoli casserole, dumplings, rolls, cornbread, mashed potatoes, chocolate cream pie, cream cheese pie, pecan pie, and lemon cake (boo hoo... squish squish!).
I actually ate sparingly, a little bit of everything, but with so much it's hard not to overeat.
----------------------------------------------
After eating, we were all sitting about. My brother tossed a football to my brother-in-law's adult son as he walked in the front door. The ball just bounced of his stomach and hit the floor. My brother made some comment about his lack of coordination. Now, this kid is a professional skateboarder, travels the globe for expositions and has had spreads in multiple skateboarding magazines. I suspect football just doesn't impress him and he did what I would have done, let it hit and then drop.
I told my brother as he walked into the next room, "Don't confuse a lack of coordination with apathy."
My brother-in-law said, "Be careful, Joe doesn't know those fancy words."
So I responded, "Hey Joe! "Apathy" means "I-don't-give-a-shit-ness."
----------------------------------------------
And it's good to be home after three hours of driving, two of which in the pouring rain. Work tomorrow. Hopefully an easy day.
