Mondays are the day off, unless it's a travel day to a new city. During the week, unless there's a rehearsal or a week day matinee (only in SF, Chicago, NYC, Philadelphia or Boston these days), all of your week days until show time are free to explore. The weekends are your busiest work time ... Most of the time, it's a five show weekend ... Friday evening; Saturday - 2 shows; Sunday - 2 shows.
I've always been interested in taking in the cities where I was performing .. I look at the architecture, the history, the cultural references, the shopping, the restaurants ... I call it city-shopping. Would I want to live here? It was the way I kept from feeling lonely on the road, as a loner. Fortunately, over the years I've been blessed with friendships in most major cities, so now it's like being paid to go see my friends!
