Another Great Kentucky Photo Op

The City of Hope and Federal Corrections
I went to London, KY for an early dinner with a chat buddy today. I got there rather early (as usual) and decided to drive to Manchester, KY to get this shot that I'd seen during my last Eastern Kentucky excursion back in January or Feburary. I've always loved the irony of the proximity of the two signs for the Manchester exit.

Today would have been my dad's 75th birthday. He often went to hang out with his buddies at the local funeral home, often dragging me and my siblings along as kids. Whenever he would make a joke that was unusual or unfunny, he'd look at me and say, "What's wrong with you? You're not from Clay County are you?" The guys would chuckle at this as Clay Co in KY is considered to be a bit rural (and as Dad would say, not that bright).

The real irony would hit me years later when I learned that my grandmother, my dad's mother, was born and raised in Manchester, later coined the City of Hope, which lies well within the confines of Clay Co. I suspect Dad never put two and two together. I wished I had at the time as it would have made for a great response to his question.

Dad (amongst his cronies): "You ain't from Clay County are you?"
Me (speaking truthfully): "No, but I hear your mother was..."

The spanking would have been SOOOO worth it. :D
