Today was a substitute Monday for me, being off yesterday. It started slowly, but things began moving along after that. Another food day at work didn't help the old waistline and I got to see a burly Marine come to pick up the office "Toys for Tots" barrel.

The afternoon was far more interesting. I got a call from a headhunter service looking for a computer/regulatory person. The poor guy had little idea what exactly he was asking for as the job apparently included a lot of jargon he's not used before. He made the deal sound sweet by including how much more money the job paid. Don't get me wrong, a pay hike would be nice, especially when the increase would be more than $10,000/year (and I'm guessing even more than that). However, money was all he really offered up in terms of why the new position would be better. Money is a very blinding bargaining chip. Most people rarely look past it to see all of the hidden pitfalls because they are enamored with dollar signs.

Time for pros and cons. Here's the breakdown:

Pros:

1. Thousand(s) of dollars more per year
2. Possibly being my own boss
3. Supposedly stable company for employment
4. Excellent retirement plan and stock options

Cons:

1. Good bye 40-hour work week (hello, 60+ hrs a week)
2. Good bye seniority
3. Good bye flexible schedule
4. Good bye government authority
5. Good bye very stable career
6. Good bye cool new foreign travel work
7. Good bye government retirement and health benefits.

I've got a lot of friends who left government service and regretted it. I also have some friends who now work for the goverment after being on the industrial fast track. They do nothing but say how much happier they are. It's a flattering offer, but I have to admit, I like my career and don't foresee me leaving anytime in the near future.
