1970's Television

I'm finally at work for the first time in nearly a week. It took a lot of effort to drag myself in here today, but so far so good. The coughing fits have almost stopped, which is a good sign.

During the last few days, I have been watching a lot of TV Land and Hallmark Channel, finding myself enthralled by, of all things, The Waltons. This show started just before I was born and I admit I found it too dull to watch as young kid. While chatting with a local friend, I brought this up yesterday. He laughed and said it couldn't compete with Little House on the Prairie. A fun discussion ensued after that. Though I watched Little House as a kid, I thought The Waltons was actually better written and more realistic. The whole town could burn down in Walnut Grove and everyone would be smiling at the end, where everyone on Walton's Mountain may be in bed that night, but the lesson wasn't always so rosy.

So being somewhat of a fan of 1970's TV, I created a poll for fun. It's behind the cut to save space. Commentary is always welcome :)

[Poll #1089152]

During my last storm chase trip the guys I was with wanted to go see the house where the Little House on the Prairie was written (Southern Missouri). I only watched the show once years ago... but I had a roomie at one time that was a big fan of the Waltons... and had the same comment as you.

I just think that Little House was too happy. No one smiles that much. And the Waltons at least had cars and radio, living in a time that a lot of people still remembered. :)

Used to watch both these shows as a kid in the 70s and I definitely agree with you in that the waltons was a better written show. The kids on Little House always seemed like they were a meltdown waiting to happen. You can only force little girls to wear pig tails 7 days a week for so long before anarchy erupts.

Poor Laura, you know that girl was massaging her scalp every night after those braids were undone. And Nellie! You had to wonder what torture device they used to get those ringed curls to hold their shape.

I couldn't choose between Bionic Woman and Wonder Woman -- I had to vote for both.

I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well and this is the first time I've acknowledged it. Take care of yourself and take as much time as you need. The last year I worked I was sick on at least 3 separate occassions. Now that I'm not in an office with other sick people who are forcing themselves to come to work because our culture frowns on being off work for being sick, I haven't come down with anything. Of course, now I've just jinxed that by saying it out loud.

I admit, I've been watching the Bionic Woman on YouTube, catching up on some of the more popular episodes. I've got a growing fondness for Jaime Sommers, but Wonder Woman is always my one true.

And thanks, I'm doing okay :)

sorry, I wasn't born yet. ;)

Loser! Catch up on Vonder Voman! [insert German Nazi accent here]

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Heaven knows 70's TV couldn't compete with the big-hair-big shoulder-pad shows of the 1980's (sarcasm)!

Love ya.. mwah! :)

The Waltons were "based" near where I grew up. I always thought it was cool when someone would head off to Charlottesville. As a little kid, I knew it was just a TV show, but I fully expected to head over the mountain and see the house where I was sure they filmed everything. The concept of a backlot in Southern California doesn't really make sense when you're a kid; why on earth wouldn't they film stuff where it's suppose to be. ;-)

Sorry, couldn't choose between Major Winchester and Klinger.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Being from KY, I guess I could relate a bit more to the Waltons crowd. And they do make it look real on those backlots!

Bionic Woman *all* the way baby. Wonder Woman may be stronger but Jaime had way more personality!

I never cared much for MASH, but I had the serious hots for BJ Hunnicut during his 70's mustache years on the show. That stache was hot.

I loved all the Charlie's Angels years... but have to admit, the Tanya Roberts year was so horrible and campy it may actually be my favorite. They spent the whole year in Hawaii it seemed and... she wasn't a cop, she was a model, how can you beat that??? I loved the opening... Kelly and Kris in cop school learning cop things... and Julie Rogers learning to balance a book on her head. hehehehe

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG! BJ had that hot mustache and was also quite furry, though I wish he'd been built more like Charles. I remember seeing a movie where David Ogden Stiers (Charles) was bearded and shirtless in bed with some bimbo played by Judith Light. Oh, quite a daddy bear he makes! :)

As for Charlie's Angels, I have to admit that I didn't like Tanya Roberts. When the broke the three former-cop rule, I lost interest. I missed Sabrina. The smartest of the three supposedly and the poor woman was stuck driving a Ford Pinto! :)

[identity profile] dendren.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who supposedly dated David Ogden Stiers... said he was as snooty and queeny in real life as on the show. I don't recall ever seeing him shirtless tho.

sigh... and the BJ stache... one of my earliest I want that man-stache memories, along with Burt Reynolds, Robert Redford (a red stache), and Perry King (a blonde stache!!!). OHHHH... and Lee Horsely. OH OH OH, and Lee Majors all stached and furry chested. sigh... I miss those 70s staches.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I used to think Lee Horsely was smokin' hot. :)

[identity profile] mikiedoggie.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really got into Bionic Woman.

And Lynda Carter was the true super heroine of the late 70s!

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wonder Woman was certainly more buxom and wore a more revealing outfit.

I do hope that the original Bionic Woman comes out on DVD. I've been watching it on YouTube and I'd forgotten how fun it was.

I hated Little House! Supposidly it was inspired by events that took place in Kansas & Oklahoma, so being from Kansas all the girls in my third grade class read the books like rabid starving hyenas and reinacted scenes from the book/TV show on the playground every day. I, of course, was in to much more sophisticated, cutting edge entertainment like Star Wars. And NO, R2-D2 would most certainly NOT have been called Half-pint. He would have left Laura Ingles to get killed by Stormtroopers when they came to Luke's house on Tatooni. And they didn't have half-pints in the galaxy far, far away... DUH.

The only reason I voted for it was because in later seasons there was a handsome, daddy bear with a gravely voice and big bushy beard that I had the hots for as a kid. And that was before I knew why I was attracted to him.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you mean Victor French who plays Isaiah Edwards? Oh yeah, he was quite the growling daddy bear! I used to love watching him and Merlin Olsen (former football player) who played Jonathan Garvey, he was quite the big, strapping, bearded bear :)

(Anonymous) 2007-11-16 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah they were both hot! And Hoss from Bonanza and Grizzley Adams! The 70s were a good time for bears on TV.

Where are all the big, burly strapping bears in today's TV?

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, the majority of guys on TV are shaving their chest hair in an attempt at looking younger I think. Just look at my object of lust Jeremy Piven! I know for a fact he's more furry than an orangutaun (I cite his role in Very Bad Things as evidence). However, in his role on "Entourage" (which I don't really watch), his chest is smooth...

I think there needs to be a bear revival on TV.

I do remember Wonder Woman when it first came out. Not sure back that what captivated me about it.

I have always liked MASH. I can play that tune in my head forever. Radar was so cute in that show too. He was so timid, but he knew that camp and how it works like the back of his hand. Reminds of me? I dunno.

Never did take to Charlie's Angels.

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Wonder Woman and Charlie's Angels from the start. One of my first memories, believe it or not, was a TV Guide commercial stating there is a new angel in town with Cheryl Ladd on the cover. I was four.

M*A*S*H was one of my dad's favorite shows, but as a kid I didn't enjoy it. Then I hit puberty and the show started to make sense :D

[identity profile] snowboardjoe.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Now, what does puberty have to do with all of this???

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.. the sexual humor of it started to make sense after I hit puberty :D

I don't know about the Little house girls having it so easy, Mary went blind! My family watched all those shows and I liked all of them but BJ cute? His head is shaped weird.
Like your new pic though ;)

[identity profile] kybearfuzz.livejournal.com 2007-11-16 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, true, Mary went blind, but I'm sure that she and her family were smiling at that end of that episode.

And thanks, my buddy [livejournal.com profile] mikiedoggie took it a few weeks back. :)
