Pearl Street
Where Home Used to Be....

This past weekend I took a trip back to my hometown of Corbin, KY. I drove down Saturday and the first thing I did was go directly to where my old house was recently removed. I was surprised how I felt, not sad so much, but feeling like I was visiting a grave of someone long gone.

I walked around the piles of dirt where the house used to stand and saw the remnants of what was there. It was like going to an archeological dig where the history I was learning about was my own. In the dirt was an old empty Skoal can long pitched by the twin, a copy of some instructions about financial aid for Berea College, a spool of thread from Mom’s sewing stuff, etc. I found a dozen bluish-green glass insulator bells that my grandfather collected from back when he worked for the phone company. I bagged them up and will put them in the flower bed next year.

A few photos got taken, like the yard where we played kickball (only our "third base" is still there) and the street sign above. Ours was the only house on Pearl Street and, with it gone, the street no longer shows up in a Mapquest or Yahoo address search.

The rest of the weekend was fairly uneventful, though there is something in development that might pop up in a future post.

Everytime I go back to NY, I drive past my childhood house. The owners haven't kept it up much, which makes me sad, but at least it's still there. I'm sure seeing an empty lot where your house used to be is a shock. Glad you found some memories to keep with you.

Thanks. It's sad to see it go, but such is life I guess.

It was demolished because it my folks moved out if it several years ago and it fell into a state of disrepair. It was a very old house long before we moved into it. It was the only house on the street and always has been, it was on a small connector street between two longer ones.

The question of what to do with it is still up in the air. The area has been zoned business so we cannot build a new house on it. For now, it'll just be empty until we figure something out.
