I totally agree with you here, although I admit I've been guilty of it in the past, but I'm WAY more conscious of it now. My often-used response to these types of questions is "Is this information for that book you're writing about me???"
I'm usually more tactful than that, I admit, but sometimes a little shock value is necessary to get the point across.
