Evening Electrician Visit
Dec. 28th, 2005 09:14 pmAfter I got home today from work, I went into the kitchen and flipped on the lights and nothing seemed odd. I turned off the lights as I left. When I came back, the lights didn't work. No biggie, I thought the bulbs had blown. So I changed the bulbs and no light. I flipped the lights on and off several times, like most idiots who notice the lights don't come on, and saw the bulbs flicker strangely.
Okay, now I was worried. I have always had an unnatural fear of the house burning down. In my mind, the light fixture flickering was shorting out and setting the ceiling insulation on fire. I would go to bed tonight and die in a fiery blaze come morning. Well, NOT on my watch...
So I found an electrician on the internet yellow pages and called. He was on his way and I was trying to find out which switch in the fuse box shut off the power the kitchen. I just love having to reset every VCR and clock in the house. The after-hours guy, Tony the Electrician, showed up soon, a skinny guy about my height with his bag of tools. Too bad he couldn't look like burly Brad, my A/C guy. Tony was good though, he immediately found that it was a bad switch and could replace it quickly and easily.
Before he could work, he showed me the price and wrote up the contract. The cost? $177!!! Okay, that was a lot, but I wanted it fixed and knew my checking had a safety cushion for such emergencies! I told him that it was fine. He seemed disappointed as he had his whole justification speech prepared. While I am glad I found this guy so fast, I couldn't help but think that somewhere there was a great lesbian or blue-collar bear electrician service I should have used.
So the switch is fixed, the lights turned on, the VCR's and clocks are reset, all is right with the world.... The peace of mind was worth it. ... and I got a couple of refrigerator magnets and a pen out of it.

Date: 2005-12-29 04:00 am (UTC)I just checked Queen City Careers Association and there was only 4 listings under Home Improvement, one of them was a listing for an electrician in Newport.
I have no idea houw reputable these people are, but it's a thought for the future.
